Budgie Gender And Age?

Featured Replies

Posted

Greetings,

First time keeping the budgies. Can anyone please help me identify the gender and age of these little birds. I was told its a male/female pair and 1 year old. However, more I read about them on the web, more confused I get. So, looking for some expert help.

Thanks in advance.

Both look to be males, yellow seems a recessive pied and the white could possible be a double factor dominant pied

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. After spending hours on the net, I had the same feeling that they are both male. However, little white color around the cere was little confusing.

Sorry to ask, but I'm hoping that is just a travel cage your budgies are pictured in and not their only home? :(

I have that same cage but use it only as a travel cage when I take my budgies to the vet as it's tiny.

It only has one plastic perch and one small swing and is too small to be a permanent home, unless they spend lots and lots of time out of the cage.

I'd also love some help with my budgie if I could.

I just picked this little guy up yesterday. I was told it's around 6 months old but I'm not sure.

Is anyone able to tell? And can someone confirm its sex for me, too? If you need more photos, let me know!

Thanks!

Looks like a young female

Hmm. I sent the same photos to a budgie breeder and he says that it's likely a male. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

If you can take a picture in natural light and closer to the cere that would help. The cere looks almost completely white on the top half which would indicate 100% female. Unless my screen is making it look a different colour I'm almost 100% sure it's female.

Good luck finding its gender

I've taken a couple more pictures in more natural light so hopefully that makes it a bit clearer. Any help is appreciated!

Original post is both males, both recessive pieds. On the white one, notice how the body color is down low near the legs. A dom pied will have the body color up around the breast. Also, lack of iris rings on a one year old indicates recessive pied.

The other person's bird is a recessive pied female. Just entering her first molt, so probably right around three months old.

Nice birds.
