Does anyone know anything about the rumours that the importation of budgerigars will be allowed again within the next two years?

 

If importation from the UK is allowed again.......

 

Do you think it will have a positive effect on the hobby?

 

Is there likely to be any noticable improvement of the quality of birds on the Australian show bench?

Where did the rumours come from???

There was a guy on the "Budgerigar Soapbox" site on Facebook.

 

He wasn't sure of the rumours either, that's why I asked here.

I see this issue has already run it's course on the Facebook site. Someone got a a letter back from the authorities: No imports.

I had a feeling the Govt wouldn't change their stance on it.

 

I forget now how much the last imports cost but several thousand for each bird.

I think it's crazy that we can't import native Australian birds into Australia but you can import Pigeons????

I guess the risk is that Australian birds may carry new Australian bird diseases. Protecting our wild species is an important concern.

Yeah, but pigeons are the rats of the air. If you can import pigeons you can import anything.

I guess you could do what the pigeon people do and bring eggs in rather than birds in your pockets when you leave the country you visited. As long as it's just one or two I doubt you'd be caught and apart from the high mortality risk you'd be all good I guess. Not that it's legal of course.

No budgerigar is worth breaking the law.

Agree. But I'm pretty sure it's legal to import live pigeons so there's no need to do the eggs thing with them. As for budgies, there is a away to bring 1 in as I understand it. However you'd have to live in England for a year and prove that you kept the bird as a pet.

 

I think imports from England/Europe would improve our current stock... It would take a few years to filter through to everyone but eventually everyone would benefit.

Bicon (Customs) will circulate a proposal to allow Budgerigars & Sperm into Australia in early 2019. There will be be 60 days for people to make comments on the report. The cost bring in birds was $800.00 so it would be about $1000.00 per bird plus what you purchase your Budgerigars. I am more concerned on importing Sperm it will cost a lot less, plus you will be able to obtain sperm from the top Breeders rather than their Culls.
