Posted January 12, 201510 yr So in the next twelve months (unless something intervenes) I plan to move from Sydney to Tasmania. I have a dog, two cockatiels and nine budgies at present. I've looked at the ferry from Melbourne and it caters to dogs with transport cages so that's great but I don't know about the transport for the birds. Taking them with me for the drive feels right as I'm right there, but if flying would be not only faster but less stress I could arrange to have them brought across that way I think. Just not sure what to do. Does anyone have any experience?
February 3, 201510 yr I moved house from Vic to Tas with a flock of canaries. The Spirit of Tasmania does take birds but you will need to apply for an import permit from the DPIWE. The permit is free but it takes time to organise. I flew my birds with Qantas freight from Melbourne because it was faster.
February 4, 201510 yr No problems. The main thing with freighting birds is to build good solid transport boxes and to always use direct flights.
February 5, 201510 yr Author okay. So what did you do? Catch the same flight? Or have someone else load them up while you meet them on the other side?
February 5, 201510 yr I caught the same flight. There was a half hour or so wait for the birds to clear customs at Qantas Frieght (the building labeled Australian Air Express) but that will probably be a bit faster if you are flying on a weekday. Why are you moving to Tasmania?
February 7, 201510 yr Author I'm looking to get out of Sydney and very much want a colder climate tree-change. As I'm studying nursing I figure I'll be able to find work in Tassie too so that should work out really well. My Border Collie will love me for all the extra space, I have a few friends who live in Launceston, and it overall just appeals to me. Once I'm done with my current qualification I'm going to save for a while and then take the plunge, but of course my biggest concerns are getting my pets down safely.
February 8, 201510 yr The weather is pretty great here, bright and sunny in summer but without 40C plus days. Everything should be fine, just make sure you apply for an import permit with the DPIWE.
February 9, 201510 yr Laura Send an email to wildlife.reception@dpipwe.tas.gov.au and tell them what you want to do and they will send you all the information you need
February 10, 201510 yr How long in advance do you think? At least a week to be safe I would say, but they were pretty quick with me and it was settled within a few days.
