Female Breeding Budgie Plucking Vent Feathers?

Featured Replies

Posted

I had setup my breeding pair about 2 weeks ago and everything was looking fine they started mating in 3 day's and the female spends most of the time in the nest box. but recently i have noticed that the female is plucking her vent feathers, she isnt showing any signs of egg binding and is spending 2/3 of the day in the nestbox her poop is huge just like usual and isnt watery or abnormal , she doesnt sit on the floor

I have breed budgies before and know what im doing i just find this strange because my last breeding pair layed fertile egg's 5 day's after mating

2 weeks isn't very long for a pair to be at egg laying stage. If the hens droppings have enlarged a lot that can be a sign she is ready to lay. I haven't had the vent plucking so don't know if this is normal with some hens. I think if you allow a bit more time, as long as they're both in breeding condition, you could have eggs shortly.

is there any poop stuck around her vent ? what you could also try is plucking a few feathers away from her vent

does she use the feathers as nesting material ? could it be possible to take a photo to show us ?
