Posted April 3, 201411 yr I just found this site and joined. This is the only way I found to post. If I'm doing it wrong, someone please direct me! I have a question... Can i incubate parakeet eggs if the female doesn't? Thanks!
April 4, 201411 yr Welcome, someone will answer you on this + I am also very interested to hear answers.
April 4, 201411 yr If you had another breeding pair you can foster eggs (marked so you know what eggs you moved). I have heard of some using incubators, but if you hatched any chicks it would mean hand rearing from day 1. Big job if you hatched a few. Also if first hen had started to incubate then left eggs they would be d.i.s.
April 5, 201411 yr Interesting. Its hard to raise from day 1. Don't they need special crop milk from Mom first few days? I have 4 females breeding at moment. All eggs hatched except 1 female has 2 chicks+ some more eggs. But what I did this time around to prevent trampling+death for younger hatchlings: I swopped the babies.1 Budgie only 1 egg hatched so I gave her a foster chick, and 1 still on eggs hatched 1 so I gave her a foster. Works like a bomb! They didn't worry about where it came from nor that it smells like another bird+a human hand. They just raised them.they are now fully feathered, pin feathers+down+they are thriving! All 1w of them.

Can i incubate parakeet eggs if the female doesn't? Thanks! Please forgive me, I'm sure you meant to put them in an incubator, but I couldn't help imagining you hunkering yourself down over the eggs.... I agree with the others, fostering to another hen would be much better than using an incubator. I have raised a couple of chicks before from day one. It is possible, but it is SOOO much work, including loss of sleep and the mental exhaustion that comes with that. I won't do it again. Mothers do produce crop milk for the newly hatched chicks, but commercial hand rearing formula is designed to provide all the nutrients a growing baby chick needs. You just mix it thinner for the first two days, then slightly thicker for days 3-5, and then the regular apple-sauce consistency until the chick weans. By the way Nana, welcome to the forum! Technically, this question should go in the breeding section of the forum, but since it is by way of introducing yourself, I think it fits okay here. I see you own 12 budgies. Where do you hail from, and how long have you owned budgies? It's nice to have you here. Edited April 5, 201411 yr by Finnie
