Posted March 9, 201411 yr my two budgie pairs have both laid eggs sadly one pair finished laying over 5 days ago, 4 eggs i have candled them and non are fertile. however my second pair have laid and their firs egg was over 2 weeks ago and then stopped laying and started again producing atm 5 but could be more as she laid her last one saturday so by monday i will be able to tell clutch size, however i have candled her eggs are atm 3 are def fertile and one is miles in front of the other, could i give this egg to my other pair to raise? as im worried once the other eggs hatch this baby will voer dominate the nest and some of the new babies may die?!?!
March 9, 201411 yr You could foster out the egg if you wanted... It shouldn't be to much trouble. Are your hens experienced or is it their 1st time?
March 9, 201411 yr Don't be to hasty in throwing away eggs that you think are clear, it all depends on when the hen begins to incubate them.
March 24, 201411 yr I concur in waiting a bit longer before making a decision about these eggs. I have found that sometimes candling at 5 days is too soon. If you foster the egg that is ready to hatch to the other hen, and it turns out that her eggs are fertile, but just haven't started developing yet, you will have an even bigger age gap in that nest than you do in the original nest. And, I have had hens raise clutches of 7 or more chicks, with two week gaps in age span, and the older chicks have not presented a problem to the younger ones. Sometimes an older chick will hog the parents attention and get all the food, but sometimes the older chicks will also help to feed the younger ones. okay, I just looked at the date of this question, and realize that whatever you were going to do, you have already done it! So how did things turn out?
