Posted February 19, 201411 yr I have a " stand over" Budgie! She pops her head into breeding box ,pecks at our new babies , fights with mating couples, I'm quite sick of her - " Big Bullie " ( I had to take out babies & Dad to protect them from her ) I think she needs to go but she has a mate and I worry if he will be okay without her? Would he find another mate or should I separate them both from the others ? ?
February 20, 201411 yr He'll be fine without her. I take it you are colony breeding (breeding in an aviary and not with each couple separated into cabinets). If you're not careful you may find she goes into another hens nest and kills/throws out the chicks so that she can use the nest... I'd be moving her on...
February 20, 201411 yr Author Thank you , I will be moving her on , she has already tried to kill another hens chick , I've taken them out and put them in separate Cage. I was concerned about her mate , but if he'll be okay .........it's goodbye nasty Girl !
February 21, 201411 yr How many breeding boxes do you have in your aviary and are they all at the same height or are some up high and some down low?
February 21, 201411 yr Author Hi Jimmy ,I have 3breeding boxes all the same height , 3 female birds ,but she always sticks her head into the other boxes Where the other babies or eggs are. I'm thinking of getting another large cage for nasty bird and her partner with her own breeding box ,or even breeding pairs , would that be an idea.
February 21, 201411 yr Definitely !!! cages are the way to go. To stop all this aggressive behaviour, as well as a lot of heartache. She may not be a nasty bird, with her own nest and partner she could be a great Mum. Just be aware she could go either way so keep a good eye on any eggs/chicks she has to make sure. Good luck with her.
February 22, 201411 yr Yeah, I'd always go for cabinet breeding if you have that option for this exact reason. I'd still keep an eye on her though because once she's had her first chicks and they've grown a little she might want to kick those chicks out to have a new clutch. I know on here there are people who say that if you are going to colony breed that you should have twice as many nest boxes as you have hens all at the same height. I've never done it so can't give an opinion if it works or not. Just another idea.
February 22, 201411 yr Author Thank you for all your advise, I have put her into a cage and she is, like you say Robyn quite a nice budgie, playing around and doing tricks hanging upside down etc , I am just starting out but have had a lot of help and advise from this site, I will put her mate and a breeding box in the cage tomorrow and will try your suggestion Jimmy. Many thanks
February 24, 201411 yr I also had a similar incident so I put her in cage with mate.they are young and mischivous! She actually got through to my finches side through a gap+killed 2 finch babies+injured 2! Best to split her from the pack till she's's had her 1st clutch, but I would keep an eye on her. I wonder what causes this odd behaviour?
February 26, 201411 yr Like with most animals they all come with seemingly different personalities, some are nice, some are not...
