Posted January 4, 201411 yr hey everyone so i have three budgies in a cage that is 61cm W by 43cm D and 71 cm H (not including stand) so i was wondering could i fit any other budgies in there comfortably without it getting too crowded? thanks for the help everyone p.s im not one to leave my budgies in there cage all day long i try to take them out for an hour in the mornings before i go to school and as soon as i get back from school until there bedtime:) thanks again much appreciated oh bty sorry for putting this in the wrong place the first time hehe yeh
January 6, 201411 yr I think maybe one more would be okay it would even up the numbers so there isn't "one man out" so to speak , no nest box though. It's great you give them time out of their cage for exercise.
January 6, 201411 yr Author Cheers for the help I would post picture for u guys to c it but I'm not to sure how to do that
January 6, 201411 yr Author Bty if I did want to breed them what flight cage would u recomend I don't have room for an aviary unfortuneatly
January 7, 201411 yr The cages I use for breeding are 61x 45x 45. Which is similar to what you already have. 1 pair per cage only.
January 7, 201411 yr Author i do have a spare cage thats 1 foot bu 1 foot by 1 foot so if i put my juvenille budgie in that could i breed my other 2 in the big cage there all in currenty or would u guys think it better to go out and buy a new one? ( basically asking whats the best way to go if i wanted too breed them) ?? thanks for the help
January 7, 201411 yr I think another cage would be best option, don't forget if you breed them you could have another 5-6 or more chicks as well. I don't think a "foot x foot" cage is big enough for a bird to be in full time though.
January 8, 201411 yr Author really i was under the impression that a cage 1 foot by 1 foot is the minimum size for 1 budgie? anyway i probably wouldn't keep all the chicks i'd probably give them to friends, family and also the the bird dealership im a volunteer at
January 8, 201411 yr Honestly I'd give them the most generously sized cage you can possibly afford... budgies might be small but they are active birds and will use up the whole extent of the cage you give them. I have one budgie in a small aviary sized cage - 100cm (3.28ft) wide by 175cm (5.74ft) tall and he makes full use. Pet shops will certainly sell the smaller cages, just as they will sell tiny little rabbit cages and rodent cages which are not really super appropriate either. They're cheap and there is a market for them unfortunately. The animals certainly can live in those size cages but they live much healthier and longer lives if they're able to be active (better for heart, bones, mental health etc) as well as having enough room to put in environmental enrichment for them to explore. Bear in mind too if you've got multiples in the same cage, it's not just a space per bird but also extra space to get out of each others face and to avoid stress from impacting. If you're breeding but not keeping the chicks, you will still have a full house with the breeding birds and adults plus newly fledged chicks who aren't yet ready to leave to new homes or the shop you mention as well for at least a few weeks as you want the babies to be eating well and established before moving them on.
January 8, 201411 yr Author kk appreciate the advice ill probably buy another cage cause thats what im gonna have to do it seems but also i have three budgies right and the 2 males were there before the female so thry have already bonded do u think i should get another male for the female or will one of the current males mate with her instead p.s i know there is a chance that won't happen
January 13, 201411 yr I just saw that you have two threads going on the same queston., I would merge them, but that would make it all look very confusing. I'm going to lock the other one so that all future responses go in the same place. Here is my post from the other one: I think that cage would be crowded with more than two budgies in it. Since you already have three' date=' I would hesitate to rock the boat, assuming the three are at peace with one another. Gender matters, too. If you have three boys getting along fine and you add a hen, watch out! If you want more budgies, maybe look into getting a second cage, or a wider one. Remember, the tallness of the cage doesn't matter- it's width that gives them more flying room across. And you need enough perch space so they are not sitting shoulder to shoulder.[/quote'] Of course, now after I've read this thread, I see that you have two males and one female. That may still give you probems eventually. You may be best off getting a second cage that is large enough to hold the spare male and all of the offspring you produce. One more thought, I always tell people that if a cage is not large enough to house TWO budgies in, then it is not large enough to house even ONE. Those 1 foot by 1 foot cages are good for nothing but travel! Edited January 13, 201411 yr by Finnie
