Posted December 12, 201311 yr Hello everyone, I have a male budgie that has never been put down to breed as he is my pet, now I want his genes to continue, however the female I intend to use has attempted to breed before but the mate got attacked by a butcher bird (evil beaks that they have), and was wondering if you can I guess re-mate her? The male is always active and often just annoys other budgies, there have only been a select few budgies that he doesn't try to dominate. Can I calm him down to be a good mate and parent if they can breed, or is it not wise to breed with this male? Thanks, Budgie_Mad.
December 12, 201311 yr He sounds like Noah who became a really good father. The only males Noah doesn't dominate are his sons. However I suppose you will make sure the female likes him first. We did have a female that killed all her mates when I was a child. She would do this without ever being seen. We would find them dead in the morning. Finally our vet figured it out. As a child I never knew what injuries they had sustained. It was like she was a midnight ninja breaking their necks or something. They were not bloody or anything. Healthy one minute then gone the next. She was very rare at the time and my father wanted to breed her. He should have stopped after we found the first dead male.
December 13, 201311 yr Hi, Yes you are able to remate your female. Budgies aren't mated for life so you can swap and change when ever you like. If you do decide to place them together make sure you monitor them at first as it can lead to fights. Thanks
December 13, 201311 yr Author Thanks everyone, I have been monitoring them, and I hope that the female wasn't the one who killed her previous mate, as he had been pecked at, however there was a butcher bird there at that time, I now shoo them off instantly.
December 14, 201311 yr Hi, if you place the pair of them in a separate cage (without nest box), and see how they respond to each other, then add a nest box once they start to show breeding behaviour they should be fine.It may take a while for them both to come into breeding condition, before adding box. Good luck with it.
December 14, 201311 yr Author Thanks robyn, that is what I am attempting now, and they appear to be bonding, however I cant tell with my albino male as he is albino he doesn't get the coloured nose, how do you tell when he's in condition?
December 16, 201311 yr Well I guess it will be when he gets "flirty" with female and she responds? l.o.l.
