Budgie Sitting With Wings Slightly Out?

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi all,

My 6 week old budgie always seems to sit with his wings just slightly out. When i have him out and he has a good fly around he looks like he is panting and has his wings out again. His sister from the same clutch has had to problems and i am starting to get worried about him.

I am trying to hold off the vet unless I really need to as of money problems, so can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Jaff

This means he is overheated. Does he have access to a bath and what temperature is the room. Maybe you could mist him.

He hasn't got a bath as it's been getting warm in SA so we have had the air con on. That's what I originally thought was wrong, but he does it no matter the temperature.

Is he tail bobbing? He may have some other underlying problem. I am rather new at this so maybe you could get a short film so the breeders can see whats going on. My bird held out her wings and shook them a bit when she was nervous though. If you hide so he can't see you and doesn't know you're watching does he still do it?

He doesn't bob his tail and it doesn't seem to matter if i'm around and seen or not as i have raised him since a baby. Could it be a temperature control issue that he has?

It's a good thing he is not tail bobbing that would mean a lung infection. I've only had one clutch and remember the babies doing this a bit after flying around. I'm not exactly sure what's going on. Obviously when he flies around he is a bit overheated but the underlying cause is obscure. It might be something temporary that passes as he gets older and more in flying shape or something pathological. My little cat had a heart condition as a baby and we could not have her vaccinated at two months. The vet made us wait till she was older. She is the ripe old age of 13 now.

I would watch for any other signs of illness for a while. A bird with a weakness is less susceptible to illness when it is in top shape. I'm not a breeder and I've only been at this for two years so hopefully one of them will chime in. I give my birds booster which I am sure has helped them greatly. The idea is if there is an underlying cause we are not aware of to give her a fighting chance.

Thank you for all the advice Phoebes :)

I will keep a close eye on him and see how he goes.
