Posted November 23, 201311 yr Hello everyone, I started with my budgies about 5 months ago and have learned a lot. Yet I am still very green on this subject. I have 6 budgies in a cage and 2 budgies in another since they old enough to breed. I misunderstood a comment I read for home treatment for beak mites and I began to mix olive oil with the bird's sees. I have noticed that a few of them have feathers missing on the sides of their beaks. Does anyone know if the feathers will regrow? Or has the oil burned the feathers for good?
November 24, 201311 yr I don't think you need to add oil to their seed, if you have scaly face mites you can treat it with Ivamectin, probably sold under different names. It is one drop on back of head if using it. OR you can smear a bit of vaseline over cere, possibly feet as well if affected, to smother mites until you get correct treatment for scaly face. Do you think your birds may be moulting? If not the feathers should grow back if you stop oil and treat for scaly face using correct treatment. Edited November 24, 201311 yr by robyn
November 24, 201311 yr Your budgies are beautiful. I really love their colors. I have never had this happen however you could take just one to the vet and the advice you get would be good for all the birds. I have heard of people using Vaseline as well but they always say not to get any into the nostrils. I guess they apply it with a Q-tip sparingly or something. Your birds don't look like they have scaly face to me but I have poor eyesight. Once I thought one of my girls had it but it turned out she just had a bit of hyperkeratosis. You could pick out the one you think is the worst and bring him or her to the vet. I'm sure whatever treatment she prescribes could be arguably given to all the others as a preventative. This would save on costs. Here a vet visit would be around 60 dollars. Robyn can people get Ivamectin online? Also I have seen the two spellings Ivermectin and Ivamectin is it the same thing? Dr Foster and smith seems to have both but for horses so the doses would be really wrong. That's why I have to go to the vet I really would have no idea how to get the product otherwise.
November 24, 201311 yr Author Thank you very much for all the info. I will go to the vet ASAP. Its hopefully nothing.
November 25, 201311 yr Hi looking at your last picture's the aqua Hen? on the coconut (I think) could have mites or something as she looks to have feathers missing around her eye. It may be still scaly face but if you are taking one to the vet I'd say pick out the one you think is worst affected. Phoebes, I have never tried to buy Ivamectin on line, I presume you could from vet suppliers. There seems to be different spellings but I think it's all the same product.
November 25, 201311 yr Author I had previously fed them all olive oil and started noticing that many had feathers missing around their beaks or eyes. I have since stopped the olive oil and am waiting to see if they regrow. Thank you for the info.
