Posted November 2, 201311 yr I picked up 6 more budgies today lol One is a big boofy boy, he's over weight and has been in a breeding cage. He can't fly. He gets about 2 ft of air and crashes. Tips on how to help him?
November 2, 201311 yr Do you know if it has flown before you bought him? Just to make sure, his wings aren't clipped are they? Try to get in contact with the previous owner and see if he flew before, it may be a genetic problem, or it could just be he just can't fly.
November 2, 201311 yr Author Wings are not clipped , got him from a breeder, the breeder said its cos he's been in a breeding cage, he said he usually swaps them around so they each get a go in the flights and avairies to exercise other wise this happens?
November 2, 201311 yr In the photo it looks like he has something on his little feet. Is that just an accumulation of something? He is really cute though and he seems very sociable to boot. I wonder if you could play with him on the ground level and get him to run around after a small toy. I have seen some people do this. If he gets exercise his weight may improve.
November 2, 201311 yr Hi Rhiannan, does your bird have a ring on? He looks to be a few years old going by his feet, my opinion only mind I'm no expert. I did buy some like this (non fliers) when I first started, off a "breeder" ??? that must have had the birds caged in little show or breeding cages as they could not fly either,( which you don't find out until you release them into aviary). The ruffled look on his chest feathers could be a sign of stress, as I also had this on a bird and was advised this could be the cause. He settled down and the ruffled feathers settled also. If your bird can't fly and has been caged to breed he must have been in the cage for some time. To get back to the flying I put mine into the aviary with food and water on the floor so they could have access to that, then every time I thought about it I'd go in and gently hunt them around to make them fly, a little at a time they gradually strengthened their wings and could then fly with the rest of the birds, it took a while. I cage my birds to breed also but only ever 2 rounds of chicks at the most, they are then returned to aviary, still able to fly at that stage, to regain condition and fitness etc. Hope this is some help to you.
November 3, 201311 yr Author I just checked his tag , its purple and says 01 ( along with other numbers going the other way) does this mean he was born in 2001?? He's such a sweet bird, let's me hold him and pat him, he doesn't really do much, I've set up the avairy so there is heaps of perches and climbing things so he can get every where but at 12 years his breeding days would be behind him would it be kinder to let him live inside in a cage? His ring says " M-something can't make it out-S 152 then horizontally says 01" and its purple can someone decode it?
November 3, 201311 yr Author So I assume I just made a goose of myself? Lol I done some research and seems the 01 ring was green, but the 2011 ring was purple that came out in sept 2011. So could " Elvis" be a 2010 bird?
November 3, 201311 yr His hatch date will be anywhere between 1st September 2010-31st August 2011. The letters will be his breeder code and the 152 will be his identifying number. If the breeder takes good records he should have been able to tell you when he hatched. If it is just a weight problem he needs exercise and low fat seeds. Hopefully someone who knows about seeds might be able to tell you which ones, I know definitely NO oats
November 3, 201311 yr Author Thankyou. Can u tell me what the 01 number means? His ring is not the breeders who I got him off, he was bred in Mackay. I think he has athrities in his feet? Ill post a photo
November 3, 201311 yr the 0 is just used as a symbol and the one comes from the 11 (2011), the symbol changes every year eg this year is a triangle and 4 for 2014. he looks like he has scaly mite, I would put some ivermectin on him
November 3, 201311 yr Nadene can advise on ring data as she is in a club. I also think by those photo's he could have scaly mite, I enlarged first picture of him and he could have it on his cere as well. Do you have Ivomectin for birds on hand? It may take a couple of doses, one drop on neck, repeat at 2 weeks if it's still present. If you last 6 all came from same place I'd do them all, if he has it they all could, it won't hurt them even if they haven't got mite it will clear any worms etc as well. If you haven't got Ivomectin you can smear feet and cere with vasaline to help smother the mites until you get the Ivomectin.
November 4, 201311 yr Author I've done them all with avimec & sprayed the housings with malason50 & fidos also been putting vasoline on him, he's easy to do as he is tame, the others tend to bite me LOL I have ivemec coming on the weekend my dad is bringing it up from the stock feed place I also trimmed his claws
November 4, 201311 yr Good work, just make sure the chemicals you use are bird friendly. Your Cobalt will think it's Christmas already with all his beauty treatment.
November 4, 201311 yr Author Yep I read & re read the labels then got hubby to double check the amount for me lol I just got back from being out for a few hours and the colbolt ( Elvis lol) already looks happier he seems to be walking & perching a lot more easier now, his poor feet must of been so sore
