Posted October 27, 201311 yr Hello, Finally my little one (who I think is a boy) came home. He is hand fed and tame. he is 8 weeks now I asked here already so many questions and read so many topics that I thought I am completely prepared And actually not :9 He is tame and not afraid human hands. At the breeder home he came on my finger and didn't even want to go back to the cage. He stand all the time in my hands and fingers allowing to touch him and even kiss him Then we came home in car and he was stand on the perch without even moving. At home he didn't move at all, no sounds coming from him. he is very gentle and if I put my hand in cage and push him a little bit he jump in my finger and even ate from my hand and my daughter's one millet. I took him off the cage (his wings are clipped now) he stood very calmly on my hand, he jumped a little on the floor and even ate from the floor (not from the feeder) some parakeet mix (grain) but he doesn't drink (i didn't see him drinking water and he doesn't eat from the feeder is it okay ? In the cage he is not moving a lot, not playing with toys, no sound still coming and he is sleeping all the time !!!!! he closes his eyes almost all the time if he is not in our hands. Now i saw him with open eyes but very calm and on one feet, so I understood that he is tired and covered the cage. it is only 5 pm here. Is it normal, is he healthy ? why he is sleeping all the time and not moving around ? Is it because he is baby ? Breeder gave me a little of the grain mix he is eating and I don't think there is any problem with food. He is moving only (and even not a lot) on our hands. thank you very much for your help http://i797.photobuc...pg?t=1382833647 http://i797.photobuc...pg?t=1382834781 Edited October 27, 201311 yr by KiwiBudgie
October 27, 201311 yr Author I make him eat. Actually I should bring feeder with seeds close to him on the perch and he started to eat. I don't know if he drinks or not But still something weird : after he eats, and when i talk to him he is opening his mouth like he is eating seeds, but no sound coming off. like he answer me but without any sound is it normal ?
October 27, 201311 yr Welcome Cado and Kiwibudgie. He is gorgeous. My young often do that, it's almost like gnashing our teeth. They grind their beaks. Budgies drink little, and normally when you don't see them. Just part of their "thing". But I would ask Robyn or Kaz, they are the more knowledgeable people on this forum. As to sleepiness: he might be tired from the change and needs to settle. Will take a day or two. Mine have a mid-morning nap and mid-afternoon nap. As long as there is food and water in his cage, he will find it and arrange his own routine. My young only start playing at 12 weeks and over...I have 20 budgies. October 27, 201311 yr Hi kiwiBudgie. Your little guy is just getting used to his new surroundings so try not to worry too much. It can take a while for a budgie to settle down into a new cage and routine. To add to that he/she has to work out where the food and water are (they generally do find it). He also has to learn what is in his cage, familiarise himself with it - new toys can be treated with suspicion at first - and then decide what he can do with it. Give him a few days to settle in. Look for the husks around the seed dish - that way you will know he is eating - and don't worry if you don't see him drinking. When I bring my chicks inside from the breeding cages into the nursery cage they are always a little quiet and subdued to begin with. Within a few days they are much more active and playful. Enjoy your new little budgie.
October 27, 201311 yr Like the others have said, it's all just part of the settling in routine. Since you can get him to eat millet from your hand, you at least don't have to worry about him not eating. If you are concerned, you can always hand feed him the millet a few times a day. Eventually you will see that you don't have to worry. If you see him sleeping, try to let him finish out his nap undisturbed. He probably needs extra rest for now. Especially if you are playing with him a lot in between naps. Don't worry, you are more prepared than you think you are, and it will all become second nature soon.
October 27, 201311 yr Totally agree with the others, almost all of my budgies did that, except for one he is very out there though.
October 28, 201311 yr I agree with what everyone else has said. When I brought home my little budgie (also hand fed) he didn't eat at first or drink. After a little while he would eat spray millet but he still was nervous and not moving around his cage at all; I was totally freaked out (Why isn't he drinking?? He should be drinking and playing and chirping!!!) LOL He didn't actually start making any sound for several days. And it also took a couple days for him to get used to moving around in his cage, but because he was hand fed and used to people he would come out and climb around on me even before he was comfortable in his cage! So I wouldn't worry about your little budgie. He loos healthy to me and as long as he's eating he should be fine. Budgies dont drink a lot of water anyway, and they can go for a little while without water. He will find his water eventually. Good luck! Cado looks like a very sweet little budgie!
