Posted October 19, 201311 yr Hi guys is any one aware of a quality show breeder in or near Melbourne whom are prepared to allow visits with the view to purchasing 8-10 VERY GOOD birds to start a new stud with. I only want to purchase birds from the one breeder (or 2 at most) as this is the advice I have read and been told to follow. I have contacted a few already but have been told that unless I belong to there club they are not interested. (Is interclub competition that fierce!!) At this stage it would appear that many also only sell at auction. I guess in some respects I am looking for a mentor who knows his own stud and can guide me as to what birds to buy in my first years. Any way enough raving, hopefully there are top breeders on here that might read this and reply. Kindest regards, Warped
October 19, 201311 yr (Is inter-club competition that fierce!!) Competition is friendly, but after the amount of effort and expense that breeders go to to produce quality birds many are dubious about persons not registered by a club and there for the possibility of being robbed. There have been many thefts due to not screening persons allowed to view an breeding aviary. When you consider that some breeders have birds that can fetch many thousands of dollars and have taken years to produce you cant blame them for being cautious. If you are wanting to find mentor and purchase quality birds join a club locally. This was the best move I have made concerning budgies and have been able to obtain excellent guidance and quality stock birds. NOTE NO BREEDER WILL SELL YOU THEIR BEST STOCK. October 19, 201311 yr Paulie has made some some excellent comments. I too have joined a club. And it was the best thing I have done with respect to keeping and breeding budgies. The members have so much knowledge and experience that they are happy to share with newbies like myself. Basically I have learnt a lot over the past 4 or 5 months - not just about breeding, but also budgie feeding, health, disease prevention, housing, general husbandry and exhibition standards. As Paulie stated, breeders do not sell their best birds, but through a club you will have the option of buying some good birds through members and also through arranged aviary visits. The members of my club have sold me some lovely birds at 'beginner' prices in order to get me started. Have a look on the BCV (Budgerigar Council Victoria) website and you will find a listing for all the Victorian clubs, as well as a wealth of other information.
October 20, 201311 yr Hi Warped, the advise that Paulie & Flip gave is good. If you are starting out breeding exhibition type budgerigars ,join a club get out there & visit as many aviaries as possible & develop your eye for a bird. Do not be in a rush to fork out all your hard earned money buying birds. You have to research the background of the birds you will eventually be interested in buying & also the breeder. By researching the breeder you have to work out a few things > IE: Do they have a few top quality birds in there avairy & does the quality drop off dramatically after those initial few top birds,if that was the case i would exit stage left & move on. That said if you go to an avairy that has birds that you like ,"but are not perfect" ,IE: This breeder may have spent years establishing a stud of birds with fantastic feather direction and awsome faces on his birds ,but by doing this they have allowed the birds to become smaller. You could go to another breeder and they might have an established stud of birds which excell in size & shoulder ,good head roll/back skull etc. Now if you could manage to aquire a few pairs from each of these breeders and combine the qualities of each > who knows you could possibly breed better birds than both of them.Easier said than done i suppose. Buying birds from a well established stud is the most important thing you have to do.
