Posted October 17, 201311 yr Sorry I have put the topic into the wrong place Hello I am very new in budgie world and new here in BBC... I don't have my budgie yet but trying to get all necessary information before What seeds should I buy for my soon-to-be little guy, where to buy it better ? (in USA) What food should I avoid to give him? I think I have read somewhere in this forum that avocado is bad for birds ? thank you very much for all your help
October 17, 201311 yr Avocado is toxic to budgerigars. Go to F.A.Q. (top left of page under picture of birds). Go to food and nutrition, then safe plants/food etc you will find a-z list of toxic/non toxic foods. Check this list before giving new foods as sometimes the least likely thing can be dangerous or fatal. In general, good seed mixture for budgerigars, cuttle-fish, calcium/Iodine bells for calcium, fresh veg's, on list e.g corn on cob, spinach/silver beet, carrots, tops as well. are just a few you can try. Millet sprays for a treat. Fresh water, clean cage, good food and company and you should have a contented little friend.
October 17, 201311 yr Author Thank you Robin very much for your answer. When I clicked on AZ list (first link) it is mostly for plants. I don't even know all these plants Should I check fruits and veggies ? And budgie food/diet links ? The list of avoid food is not that big (not like toxic plants ): almost all fruits can be given (except for some included avocado and apple seeds)... How about apple without skin ? (I think skin is not good because of pesticides) I have seen that corn plants is toxic but the cob is not, am I correct ? i have seen the list of basic food. Also I saw that only 100% organic strawberry can be allowed. Is the title on the package organic enough to be sure ? Also what to do if budgie is with us during dinner time and would like to try ? thanks oh also... I have a betta fish and I now realize that some betta fish dry warms box and grains don't have cover. Should I remove it from the budgie's view ? Edited October 17, 201311 yr by KiwiBudgie
October 18, 201311 yr The skin on the apple is fine as long as it is washed well, the problem with the seeds is they contain very mild doses of arsenic which is bigger animals or humans has no affect but they are to small and can be poisoned.
October 18, 201311 yr Author thank you. I still think I will remove the skin of the apple to be sure that i washed it well
October 18, 201311 yr I'm in Canada but buy almost everything in the States. The best place I have found so far is Dr Foster and Smith. I like it because there are no surprise fees when the stuff is delivered. They have great baths and bottles, even cages. I got my birds these feeders that stop them from spilling as much seed, it's called a seed coral. I just love these because one of my birds, Allie, is a pro at taking the feeders off the cage and throwing them on the ground, she is bionic. I get vitamins and booster there too. My avian vet sells the same vitamins for twice the price. Like the french say Un fou dans une poche. I can't resist saving money. I forgot to say the most important thing, I've had a stroke so I am a bit of a bird brain, they sell seeds separately so you can make your own mix at home. They also sell Harrison's pellets at half the price my vet sells them. You can get alfalfa there as well, I am ordering some this week, apparently budgies love it. I give them a seed mix that is treated with co2 from my local pet shop. Just an ordinary budgie mix with veggies in it. Then I give them biological broccoli when I can find it. They get canned corn with no additives, no salt. Also I love to grate carrots for them. I have been trying to get them to eat fruit for quite some time and finally some of them tasted apple slices. Allie loves little cherry tomatoes fresh from the garden only though for some reason. Edited October 18, 201311 yr by Phoebes

October 19, 201311 yr Author Hi Paulie, yes thank you !!! Petco and pet arcade I am going very often especially i thought to buy my budgie there. But now as I want to have a handed baby, i think i have found a breeder now waiting for my budgie is this one good ? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+5911+8539+24509&pcatid=24509&r=7 Also if I buy a package of 35lb - here on in the store, for how long is this quantity ? How much should I give per day ? thank you
October 20, 201311 yr Hi Kiwi As I am in Australia I'm not rely aware of who in the US is good or not. Have heard good reports abt Dr Foster products but haven't used them my self. I'm pretty skeptical abt any processed product that claims to be a complete food, some are quite good and some are terrible. As to how long 35lb of the product will last I cannot say, depends on how many birds you have, what other foods are served and how much is waste. I use a base seed mix that contains Canary seed, Japanese Millet, Shiro Millet, White french millet,Panicum, Panorama Millet, Veg oil, iodine Vit A, Vit D3, VitE. to this I add abt 10% steam rolled oats husk on and abt 10% grey stripe sunflower seed. Then add fresh vegies and or fresh grasses. today they got a big feed of wild Rye Grass with milk seed in tact and a selection of germinated and growing millets ect. These are just the seed as described thrown onto the top of a pot pot using coco fiber and perlite medium water cover with bird net and let grow. "See picture" this is after abt 20 min in the flight was 200mm tall they just love it I always offer more food than needed, especially when trying to get hens into breeding condition. A land of plenty is conducive to breeding Edited October 20, 201311 yr by paulie
October 25, 201311 yr Hi Kiwi Budgie, I moved your topic into the Food and Nutrition section for you. When my customers ask me what seed to feed their budgies, I always tell them to get a blend for finches. I always found that those had a lot more variety of seeds than the budgie mixes, and a lot less extra junk added in. But I guess it's been a long time since I looked for bird seed in a pet store. I just checked both Petco.com and Petsmart.com, and I couldn't find any finch food that was just seed! It seems that now even finch and canary blends have added pellets and dried fruits and other odd things in them. I think that even if people's birds are willing to eat those other (unnecessary IMO) added things, having them mixed into your seed bag in a proportion that you have no control over will lead to a lot of waste. If I were going to use pellets and dried herbs and whatnot in my birds' diet, I would rather buy those things separately, and only use them sparingly. If the stores don't carry seed mixes that are just seeds only, then it may be a good idea buying seeds on line.
