the bird I have that is on a nest of four eggs, she hatched a chick 4 days ago it was and still is heathy, growing great, I checked at midnight last night and another was in the process of hatching but I just checked again now and its dead I'll put a photo up, wondering if u can give ideas on why its dead, the first chick is massive compared to the dead one

Did you notice if it looked like it has been fed with regularity? Did the crop look full when you looked at the chick?

Chicks don't need feeding within the first 24 hours of hatching so not getting fed wouldn't be the problem.

The chick could of had something wrong with it that couldn't be seen and that is why it is dead. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks

Hi Rhiannan,

Maybe by hatching at night it may not have been covered by Mum and died from cold. Your 4 day old would have increased in size rapidly after hatching, hence the size difference. There are lots of things that could cause a death, it could have been exhausted from hatching got cold etc it's hard to say. Just keep an eye out for any more problems as others hatch. We all get the odd chick death or d.i.s. but usually it's the exception rather than the rule. Good luck with next 2 eggs.

Just adding that if first chick is 4 days maybe 2nd was overdue or maybe one egg in between didn't hatch as they usually hatch in 2 day intervals.

Sorry about your baby, but as Robyn said there are a lot of reasons that babies die. It looks like it had been fed but its belly looks a bit yellow, it may have just been a weaker chick or had some type of infection. Good luck with the rest of the eggs and the chick you already have.

What bad luck :( I was very excited when you said it was hatching! It does happen sometimes unfortunately :( Its stomach does look unusual so I suspect it may just have been born weaker or maybe it wasn't quite developed correctly inside. I have had a few look exactly like this in the past and I suspect it is just that they haven't develpoed properly, especially when the rest of their siblings are healthy :)

I hope the next one is okay! Glad to hear the older one is doing well still.

Thanks sunshine I was very excited aswell then thought maybe it was my fault for disturbing the nest as it was hatching?

I just checked again and there is another chick, I'm now totally amazed at how fast they grow as it is tiny compared to the older one!! Lol

Nawww they look so cute all snuggled up. I was not your fault.

Wow, I didn't know the chicks don't need feeding right away. I only had the one clutch and mom was really really good and stuffing them really full. Sometimes I kinda worried they would burst.
