October 31, 201311 yr yellow cock above is dad to the chick & eggs this hen is sitting on, what possible colours will chicks be Is it this hen? Between this photo and the one that just shows a tiny bit of her head and shoulder, she doesn't look like a spangle to me, but seeing her back may tell a different story. She looks like a recessive pied in this photo. Lutino cocks can be hiding all manner of mutations, so if he has clearflight pied and recessive pied, then these two could easily produce a Dark Eyed Clear chick. I assume he has red eyes? What about iris rings? If he has red eyes, but no iris rings, then he is a recessive pied as well as a lutino. (Or he could also be a DEC himself.)
October 31, 201311 yr Author The big chick does have red eyes! Lol when I held him up to sun I could see red and it also has green coming trough on its back Youngest one looks like black eyes though
October 31, 201311 yr Cock looks Dark Eyed Clear from picture, A combination of Recessive Pied and Clearflight Pied. If has red eyes is Lutino, doesn't always show up in pics and looks to not have white iris rings as in Df spangle. Hen looks to be Clearflight Dom Pied combo. Assuming that cock is not lutino or Df spangle. your chicks are likely to be Black Eyed Clear. Hard to come by and often confused
October 31, 201311 yr Author Thank you, the cock in sure is black eyes. Can the chicks be sexed with above info?
October 31, 201311 yr The big chick does have red eyes! Lol when I held him up to sun I could see red and it also has green coming trough on its back Youngest one looks like black eyes though okay, so with the color this chick has on its back, it is NOT a lutino. What red you are seeing in its eyes is because recessive pied budgies actually have dark plum colored eyes. They will look black, but if you get them in the right lighting, you can sometimes see a red-brown cast. I still think the hen looks like a recessive pied, possibly in combination with dominant pied. At the very least, since you are getting recessive pied and dark eyed clear chicks, you know she is at least split to recessive pied. The father must be a dark eyed clear. (Black Eyed Self is a different mutation, and they often get confused because people think the words Dark and Black are interchangeable.)
October 31, 201311 yr Author Thank you before I joined this from I only knew them as " yellow , blue & white, green" etc lol
October 31, 201311 yr Thank you before I joined this from I only knew them as " yellow , blue & white, green" etc lol Me too! When I got my first two budgies, I had one green and yellow one, and one blue one. I was happy, because I had "one of each color". Boy was I wrong! I think I was doomed once I came here and found out about all the colors they do come in.
October 31, 201311 yr That's very interesting. Since it's not a lutino, do you know what its parents are? They would both have to be spangles in order for it to be a DF spangle. The only other option is dark eyed clear. Unless maybe it has some markings coming in on it somewhere that I can't see in the photos. The parents don't have to be both spangles. The male can be split spangle, as I get df spangles out of this combination. Dominated Pied Cock + Spangle Hen = So I guess my cock bird is split spangle.

Budgies can't be split spangled he either is or isn't. He either is a spangled dom pied or if in a colony its a different cock.

Incorrect.........as spangle is a dominant gene no budgie can be split spangle This girl has a deformed beak. I picked up 5 budgies yesterday this girl was in a pair, I pointed it out to the breeder, he said it doesn't affect her & just gave her too me, she can eat well but I'm very sad for her, I read I can clip her beak to help, should I or should I put her down? She's all white the green is reflection from the avairy your girl has whats called scissorbeak...she would have hatched with this deformity .......her beak will continue to grow wrong as neither top of bottom beak works with each other in the usual way to shape it and keep it in trim....you will need to constantly trim it back for her to eat properly
November 11, 201311 yr "Incorrect.........as spangle is a dominant gene no budgie can be split spangle" okay I'm confused KAZ abt why a bird cannot be split to spangle. I have just had a nest fledge with 3 X light green spangle 2 x YF T1, Violet normal Cock is OIlive Violet opaline / spangle? Hen is Df Yf presenting as sky Normal /? According to what you say here KAZ this is not possible YET HERE IT IS. I'm confused The only thing I can think of is that cock may be masking Sp somehow Ill start a new thread for this Edited November 11, 201311 yr by paulie
November 12, 201311 yr Hey Kaz not sure how this happened I got a df spangle from Blue Dominate pied(cock) + Blue Spangle(hen) Edited November 12, 201311 yr by L__J
November 14, 201311 yr LJ your dom pied must be a dom pied spangle ....you can only get a df spangle from TWO spangle parents colony breeding or cabinet breeding ? post piks of the parents "Incorrect.........as spangle is a dominant gene no budgie can be split spangle" okay I'm confused KAZ abt why a bird cannot be split to spangle. Its a DOMINANT gene ....one is either spangle or it isnt ...it can be carried. It can be hidden only in albino, lutino, yf albino, and df spangles ...... half the issues are mis identification of the parent birds, OR colony breeding, or hen retaining sperm form another mating post piks of the parents Edited November 14, 201311 yr by **KAZ**
November 18, 201311 yr Hey so how can you tell his a spangle. Why is there no spangle wing markings? Edited November 18, 201311 yr by L__J
November 19, 201311 yr He has a small amount of opaline spangle wing markings on the top of his wings. The rest of his wing is clear from being dom pied . Here are two examples of opaline spangles, here you can see the body colour has replaced the black that you would normally see in a spangle.
