I have a new aviary that I have build.

It is four months old.

I have 9 budgies, 9 canaries and 5 quails.

 

My question is that I have three nest boxes in the flight area, which one of the budgies is laying eggs.

So far she has laid 6 eggs, I have removed them and placed a dummy egg in there place as she laid them.

My question is how many eggs do they normally lay, before I place them back.

 

Also can I take the nest box and place it to the side of a cage and place the mother and father in this cage?

Is it best to leave alone?

 

I have separated the quails.

I only had one female lay eggs. I separated her and the male to a single cage with a nest and put the egg in there. They continued to take care of the egg and laid more. All hatched.

 

I separated them because I have read many horror stories about females killing babies to steal the nest. I have limited experience but separating the couple worked fine for me and all the babies reached maturity.

It's not usually a good idea to mix hookbill birds (budgies) with pointed bill birds (canaries). It can often result in the canaries loosing a couple of legs.

 

I haven't heard of removing eggs and placing dummy eggs for budgies, this usually happens when breeding canaries. Females will usually lay clutches of 4-6 but many have larger clutches, some resulting in up to 9 or more eggs.
