Hi all. Just wondering if anyone is able to identify a bleeding nostril and weight loss as symptoms of an illness. I have a cock bird in a hospital cage as a result of these issues. Thanks for any information.

Have you wormed your birds Pebble? Is the bleeding heavy, is it from a fight with other birds e.g. if it's a sign of illness without vet help it would be hard to say.

 

If you have Ivomectin I'd give him a drop of that on neck, which should see off any worms etc, which may account for the weight loss but other than that I'm sorry not to be more help. Hope he comes good for you.

Thanks Robyn. Yes I do regularly worm my birds with a wormer in their water. But I will try some Ivermectin for this fellow. He was in the aviary with the others. The bleeding is only very light and not constant. It is only from one nostril. I am worried because one of this cock birds sons died seemingly for no reason. When I looked at him he had a little blood trickle from his nostril. At the time I thought perhaps he had flown into something in the cage in a night fright. But now his father has the nose bleed also I am worried. I have him on antibiotics and will worm him just in case. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is a bit tricky if son has died with similar symptoms it may be a genetic thing? Bleeding from nose seems to suggest some sort of head/brain problem, I don't know if I would breed from him again until you sort it out. If Dad comes good and stops bleeding, gains weight etc. it may be okay . as long as no other offspring develops this problem.

 

Maybe someone else has had this and can advise.

my bird had a bleeding nostril then i found out he had a cancer if he does it will come in at least 3 weeks when it if it does go take him to the vet to get it removed unfortunetly i didnt know that at the time and my baby budgie died but then i found out it can simply be removed : (

Thanks ilovebirds. Was the cancer your bird had a tumor? Where on the birds body did it develop. I will keep a close eye out and take him to the vet if I suspect cancer. He is much happier today and really eating plenty. Hope he is okay. Thanks for the information.

I had a scare with one of my birds where I thought she had blood above her nostrils. It turned out that some of the seeds had red coloring on it. The male had spit some up on to her face somehow. I later noticed the red coloring on certain parts of the food. The red color was a little bright to be blood but very scary at first view. I just thought I would add this in case some other budgie owners have the same scare.

 

I wish people would not put coloring onto bird food.

Thanks Phoebes. It was definitely blood but I will keep my eyes open for foods with colour in them. Onion is doing well and there has been no more blood. I have put him on a course of antibiotics and he is healthy and well. Unfortunately I lost his daughter last night. She had no blood but seemingly blocked nostrils. I am starting to lean towards robyn's suggestion. Perhaps it is something genetic because all my other birds are fighting fit. Very sad to lose the ones I bred myself especially since I am new to breeding : (

Sorry you lost your hen Pebble, again if you have lost a Son & Daughter of Onions, sounds like it could be a genetic link.

I don't think I'd try him again for a while then maybe do a test clutch again and see if it shows up again.

Has he gained any weight ?

Thanks robyn. Yes he has gained weight and as long as there are no more nose bleeds I will put him back in the aviary in a fortnight. He is only a pet budgie so I just wont breed with him again. It is a shame because he is a pretty thing and his babies are lovely. But I intend to breed show birds so I will focus on my show stock and just keep my pets. I would have liked to have bred his sons to my quality hens to improve my general stock. Not sure now just in case the healthy sons are carrying the same problem. What do you think? All opinions from experienced breeders would be very welcome.

Sorry about the loss, they are so tiny and but the vet bills are not. I'll be reading along hoping to ready myself if ever this happens.

I mentioned your problem today to the vet. I asked her if it could be genetic and she said more likely viral or something else. She said it's a serious symptom. Sorry it's not better news.

My budgie butters just started randomly bleeding from his left nostril and is having a hard time breathing not only that he’s been bobbing his tail lately I don’t know what happened I’ve had him for about two years and his symptoms recently started if you know the cause of this please tell me thankyou
