Budgies Burying Eggs

Featured Replies

Posted

My budgies buryed their eggs in wood shavings and I have no idea why.

Could someone please tell me why they would have done that

They may not be burying them, they may just be sinking into shavings with weight of Mum sitting on the eggs. If that's the case they should be okay, if Mum still incubates them. Do you have a concave in nest box? If so just put a thin layer of shavings under eggs in concave, Mum will move them around to where she wants them.

If they are really burying them, I haven't heard of this behaviour but someone else may know.

Thanks um she rolled them into the corner were she made a pile and covered in shavings I'm new to breeding and I don't know what a concave nest box is.

Thanks for the help

Hi, a concave is a smooth dish shaped dish in floor of nest box. Somewhere on here there was a step by step post on how to make one by Splat I think. If I can find it I'll post again with details. How many eggs does hen have?

She had 4 one hatched and died so she currently has 3.

Thanks

My nest boxes are not concave

Hi, if you look under F.A.Q. (right at the top of this page)

Scroll down to CAGE DISCUSSIONS. there is a pinned article called, MAKING A CONCAVE, by Splat a member who used to be very active on here. This will give you an idea on how to make a concave or what it is etc. You may even be able to buy one at a pet store, if your lucky, it's just like a false floor that fits inside your nest box.

I f your hen has 3 eggs left, if fertile they should hatch at 2 day intervals so, I'd say it's a bit late to disturb her nest box at this stage. See how she goes and keep us posted on any chicks to see if she feeds them etc.

Would that mean the last 3 eggs I have are un fertile because one egg hatched more than 2 days ago?

Not really 2nd egg may be a dud but others may still hatch. Leave the eggs in box until well past day you think they are due. Each egg will hatch after about 18 days of incubation.

Is Mum still sitting on remaining eggs. If so leave her be until you think it is past the due date of eggs, if she thinks they are duds she may leave them of her own accord.

I sent u a message about her throwing her eggs out of nest .ect

Thanks

Sorry you lost your eggs, If you can get hold of a concave for your nest box that will help keep eggs together, it is placed so the hollow is at the back of box not near entry hole. They like it a bit darker and they can get in and out of box without jumping all over eggs. She may lay another clutch fairly soon if she's still in breeding condition. Good luck and keep us posted as to how you go.
