I have a pair og budgies that in the breeding box a pair of chicks. An cockatiel has moved in and laid her eggs to which she is sitting on. she appears to be protective of the two budgies to the point where she will not let the parent budgies back into the nesting box. she covers the two budgies protectively when I look into the nesting box. has anyone come across this before and what was the outcome?

Have not heard of this, if she is not letting parents in to feed chicks, do you know if she has fed them? How old are the chicks? If she does feed them, which I suppose may happen if she is protecting them, they may be o.k. If chicks are really small you may have to remove cockatiel to another cage and let budgies see if they will go back to feeding chicks. Alternately you could remove chicks to another cage with parents if that's possible, so you don't lose your 'tiel eggs. I really think it depends on the age of chicks.

Hi,

I also house cockatiels with my budgies but the cockatiels are only male, but one of the cockatiels over the years has always helped the budgies incubate the eggs and then raise the babies without problems. But he usually allows the parents in the box as well.

Thanks
