3 Weeks Old Chick Abandoned By Parents. Need Help Asap In Saving It

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have around 5 pair of Parakeets at my home. One of the youngest parakeet pair laid eggs and 3 of them hatched. The male parent was not dedicated in feeding the chickes and all of them looks puny and un-health. Another female parakeet attached the chickes and two of them died.

The only alive chick is not been taken care by the parents now. It looks very sick; To my horror the mother started attacking it and the poor chick starts bleeding from head. We have to isolate the chick to save if from the torture of its own mother.

It can’t eat by itself. It was not feed for last 2 days. I am worried a lot and would like to save this poor creature. Please let me know how to feed the chick and save its life.

Thanks a lot,

Kiru

Hi Kiru, How old is the chick??

Sorry Kiru, my bad just realised the age of the chicks was in the heading of your topic.....sorry! Try viewing this for some useful tips, it may help.

I feel your pain but unfortunately sometimes when this happens you just have to let nature take its course. I would recommend if you want to breed your budgies the best way to avoid these problems is to remove the nest boxes from your aviary and only pair up the mature pairs you would like to breed from in separate breeding cages. That way you won't get the young immature budgies breeding and the breeding pairs won't have their nests raided by other hens. Hope this helps. Good luck

Hi Rich,

It is around 3 weeks old. It doesn't look like a 3 weeks old chick. By now it should have wings (have seen in other chicks from other pairs.) But it still looks skinny and reddish with few hair like feathers. It looks nervous and shivering all the time.

Please let me know how to feed it. I think chicks will be feed with partially digested food by parent; But this one needs my care as the parents has abandoned it.

Thanks,

Kiru

Thanks a lot Rick for your reply and help!!

You will need to get hand rearing food a.s.a.p. If you can't get that, try feeding it baby rice cereal mixed with a little boiled water from a spoon/ toothpick whatever.

Even plain yoghurt to get something into it or it will die. At 3 weeks it should be starting to feather up but if it's been half starved it will be set back a lot.

The video from Rich is a great little learning tool to show how it's done. If you can get some food into your chick, let us know how you go.
