August 14, 201311 yr Yum, yum We've just got some of the seed feeders in your photo, work great with budgies, but a disaster with canaries who just keep picking through for the ‘best’ seeds and empty the glass jar in no time at all !! Our 4 young hens are in a nursery cage also & are very flighty and bossy with each other !
August 14, 201311 yr They are really cute robyn. The little gray one is a lovely chunky little thing!
August 15, 201311 yr Author Thanks all, I love my grey as well, another one still in nest box. Some lovely pieds to come as well from another box.
August 27, 201311 yr Author Adding some update pics of some. no 1 These 2 are only chicks from8 eggs !! Could be a hen & cock not sure. From smoky grey op & sky hen, looks like some green coming into it somehow.? This is a family shot of my pied nest. Same again note no 6 in corner mum laid again to-day. Just because ! Peanut. Now 4 yr old. Has not shown any interest in hens. He loves to come for a chat in aviary.
August 27, 201311 yr Author Thanks Nadene, y.f.spangle is out of my (late) Aquarius, that had all the changing cere drama. This one is not quite as aqua as his Dad but he's very nice.
August 27, 201311 yr I think you may be right Robyn, cock snuggled in the corner and hen next to him, keep us posted as they develop. We have 3 from 7 eggs with 3 dead in shell and 1 not fertile, looks like all hens, 2 greens & 1 Lutino .. we just can't seem to get boys !!
August 30, 201311 yr Author Thanks Sherlock, I'm trying to guess sex of chicks. I'm beginning to think Mum may have been playing fast and loose, before I paired her up as she laid fairly quickly when I caged them BUT now my 2 chicks are showing definite signs of green with yellow spangle wings. Very much like a couple of birds I have in aviary. also last 6 eggs were all clear. I don't think smoky, Dad, had much input but now has to rear 2 step kids.!!! Going back to my old pics Dad had a mauve/ pied Dad and Opaline cobalt Mum.
August 31, 201311 yr Hi guys n gals. Thinking abt why there are so many infertile eggs. Don't know if any one else is plucking around birds vents before putting pairs down. Since having started this practice I'm getting 97% fertile eggs. Currently have more nests with 6, 8, 8 fertile eggs in each. My Nest 1 has 4 chicks hatched with another 4 fertile. Sherlock, Chicks dead in shell could be a lack of iodine for hen prior to laying. it is essential for thyroid function and possibly the dead in shell chicks just don't have the strength to escape the shell. Not fact but an idea abt what may be happening. Paulie
September 1, 201311 yr Author Well I've got my first chick just hatched from Albino hen/ pied male. 1 egg was o/due 2nd was due 31 hatched today. I had one nest with 2 chicks 6 clear eggs. I give mine iodine in water, all birds including caged but I have still had clear eggs so who knows what is the cause. Don't quote me but I think I read excess Iodine can cause infertility. I'll check that again.
September 1, 201311 yr Infertility seems pretty wide spread at the moment with a lot of breeders I have spoken to, so maybe it's a nature thing that we humans don't know.
September 6, 201311 yr Author 3 chicks in Albino nest, no3 red eyed yahoo!, 2 eggs to go, removed 3 clear. I presume red eye will be Cock if anyone can tell me, Dad is opaline violet pied? Another 5 eggs in pied nest. 4 eggs green & gold hen, she lays in cage, not nest box I pick up eggs, put them in nest box and she sits??? Thought this time she may have laid in nest, no same old same old so far 2 look fertile. 2 chicks in 4th nest. As it's hotting up early this year I won't have any more down, after this lot, until early next year.
September 7, 201311 yr Author Adding a couple of pics. 1st Albino nest. pics blurred but you can see red eyes on little chick. hatched 1,5,7 sept. http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/robynethel/5.jpg Second last to fledge from pied nest. Last of pied chicks. http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/robynethel/1.jpg The ring in. Don't think smoky is the Dad of these. (Smoky is Cock in this picture). Mum sky blue normal. Edited October 7, 201311 yr by birdluv Sorry but had to change two pictures into links, They are over the forums limit of 640x480
September 7, 201311 yr What a shame the weather has stopped you Robyn. Apart from your lovely chicks coming through I have a selfish agenda. I will not be able to breed my birds again till after Christmas. Your posts and lovely pictures have been tiding me over till I can breed some more : ) What colour is Smokey? He looks mauve but I can't tell. I love your ring-ins!
September 7, 201311 yr I presume red eye will be Cock if anyone can tell me, Dad is opaline violet pied? Hi Robyn, if mom is albino, then the albino chick can be either gender, and dad must be split to ino. Also remember, any sons you get from an albino mother will be split to albino.
September 8, 201311 yr Author Thanks Finnie. I know which Cock is Dad to Albino, so if he's split then maybe the Cock bird in nest now is an uncle to her and also split ino. As I only have pets I haven't got really detailed breeding records. Not having rings make it hard as well to keep track of every bird. ( birds from same nest can look very similar as adults) Thanks Pebble, Smoky is a lovely mauve/grey opaline. He and china bred some lovely chicks but this time he's missed out I'd say. One ring in is lime green body other is nearly olive.
September 11, 201311 yr Author Small update, all eggs have hatched in Albino nest so 5 chicks 3 clear for that clutch. My "ring in" nest Mum has decided to lay again so if she has fertile eggs this time they must be Smoky's. Nine eggs (2nd round) in pied's nest, didn't think she would lay that many!!! Gr. & Gold nest has now laid 6 eggs, all in cage. Put wood shavings in cage to protect eggs, don't know if she lays off perch or on floor. It has worked so far as 3 at least are fertile.
September 16, 201311 yr Author adding a couple more pics. ring in 1. ring in 2 deciding to jump!! Casper my double factor spangle, with suffusion, he was pure white before first moult has been in a spat, over a hen !!
September 24, 201311 yr Robyn I have a number of chicks that are similar to your ring-ins. but olive bodies and almost black cheek patches
September 24, 201311 yr Author I have a few also Paulie, more lime green on bodies, like first chick, 2nd is nearly olive body. One of the Cock birds in aviary must be the culprit. I think I will add hens to nest box a bit longer before adding Cock birds next time so I know what I should be getting.
September 24, 201311 yr Great thread, I could just spend all day looking at the lovely photos of these beautiful birds. Every time I think I have seen every color a budgie can be it seems someone manages to prove me wrong with some dazzling picture.
October 2, 201311 yr Author Well looks like my little Albino is no more, lost one chick out of nest and guess which one it was. Albino chick, didn't realise at first it was that chick but as they started to get a bit of colour realised my Albino was not there so it was the one that died. Most disappointed but will try same pair again later.
