My New Breeding Journal

Featured Replies

Posted

I just thought I would start a new journal because all the old pairs and the last chicks have been put back in the aviary and I now have 3 new pairs :D

This is my new double cabinet I have had for a week, yay I now have 2 of them (the other is in the aviary)

Pair 1 has 6 eggs :) of course there was a set back she went off the eggs and they went cold and 2 embryos died but was very happy to discover a heart beat in another egg I thought didn't make it.

Pair 2 were put down a week later but the hen didn't bond with the male and I changed him for another one and they mated after about 10 seconds, so fingers crossed.

Pair 3 is a new pair given to me 10 days ago and I was told to put them straight down to breed so I did and she went into the nest box the same day I put her in there :)

This is pair 3, my new birds

They are so cute together :D

Update already pair number 2 laid their first egg today :D

nice one :)

them breeding cabinets ebay?

  • Author

I bought the cabinets from a local pet shop. :)

sweet wish our pet stores here were stocked like that.

Pair 1 have 2 little pinkies now and that's all they will have out of their clutch, unfortunately the egg I found with the heartbeat was addled. I did have to help chick 2 out of the egg, it seemed after 8 hours it was still only breaking the shell in one spot and when I got it out it was wedged sideways.

Pair 2 have 4 eggs, I think they will only be having 2 chicks as well. the first 2 eggs are no good.

Pair 3 still waiting :D

New cabinets look great Nadene. Love pair 3 as well. I bred a couple that look like the hen, don't know what to call them. Pictures I've seen they said clearwings, so dont know. I just love their sherbet/lime green colour.

I also have 4 nests down, 6 chicks, 5 chicks, 4 chicks + 4 eggs and 1 pair still cleaning out her nest.

Hope you have had all your little "glitches" for this round.

Thanks Robyn. The green hen is a cinnamon opaline light green spangle but apparently the cinnamon alters the body colour and makes it lighter and he is a DF spangle. They are doing a lot of mating so hopefully eggs will come soon.

Sounds like you have your hands full again. You must have very happy birds. You'll have a full aviary. :D

Good and bad news

Pair 1 chicks are doing great and chick 1 has its leg ring on :)

Pair 2 had a 4 day break and has laid 2 more egg but the bad news is she put little holes in 2 of the egg which were due to hatch in a week :(

Pair 3 has laid their first egg :)

Do you think your band-aid trick would work on the chipped eggs Nadene? Maybe if the membrane is intact they might survive. Worth a try.

  • Author

I have put band-aids on and the egg that was the most damaged that I don't hold much hope I have put in the incubator. All I can do now is keep my fingers crossed. It's the same hen, I don't know why or how she does it :(

What a disaster I'm having with this round. One of the eggs in the incubator hatched but died at three days after looking great, the same hens last egg which I fostered out because of the gap between the chicks would have been to big hatched and is now not being fed by the foster hen and I have been feeding for the last 24hrs and to top it off pair 3 laid all clear eggs. I feel like I want to cry :(

On a better note here are the 2 older chicks :D

Sounds like your having the same set backs I had last round Nadene.

My second round went much better I have just on sold 11 babies to pet shop as I am going to be well over my 50 by the time the box's are empty .

I've got 4 eggs so far from my one and only Albino, she's in with a violet pied, so awaiting the outcome of those.

6 pied's in nest 2

2 chicks 6 eggs, no 3

Just paired my gr. & Gold hen to Cock bird that looks like your hen no 3 pr. in box 4.

Shame your pair 3 had clears maybe he was going out of cond? Be worth a second try. Maybe if she lays 2nd round you may be lucky.

I'm glad to hear everything is going so well in your second round Robyn, hopefully mine will be better. You will have to put some baby pictures, I love to see your babies and keep us posted on the Albino. :D

:( :( :( I candled the rest of my nest with 2 chicks, 6 eggs, ALL EGGS ARE CLEAR. so looks like 2 chicks from that nest, both successful breeders in the past.???

My 6 pieds are looking great 3 popped into cage to-day.

Not game to candle Albino's eggs yet !!

Hope your plucked chick is okay and it doesn't keep happening. Do you know if it's Mum? If so, has she done it before do you know?

  • Author

It was mum, she had a bit of blood on her face. I think she wants to lay again. This is what the chick looks like now :(

I'm going to let pair 3 try again. They were given to me and told to try them but he is a older bird and this was her first round, so fingers crossed.

I split up pair 2 after the trouble with the eggs because she's done it before and I don't want to go through it again.

I do have some good news on the plucked chick, a lot of the feathers were broken off rather than pulled out so hopefully the permanent damage will be minimal if any :D

  • Author

Two of my hens are finally laying at the same time, I have 3 eggs between 2 hens and my half naked chick is growing its feathers and down back YAY!!!! :D

Glad to hear your chick is feathering again Nadene, has Mum attacked any others?

Great news that your hens are laying. :) I have 1 o.due egg in Albino nest hope rest hatch.

  • Author

It was her first clutch and she only had 2 chicks but she just attacked the one which was the most demanding so I really think she did it because she wanted to lay again. I'll have to keep an eye on her with the second clutch and probably take her out when the chicks are old enough to be looked after by the father so she doesn't do it again.

Make that all 3 hens laying :D

I hope your babies start to hatch soon Robyn :)

Hi Nadene, I have one hen in particular who has plucked the feathers of every chick she's had! To date every one of them (which is about 10 so far) have grown all of their feathers back no problem to the point you would never know they were without half their feathers upon leaving the nest. She continues to raise them to fledging without a problem so I just keep a close eye on them, otherwise she is a good mother. Hopefully yours turns out to be the same! Good Luck!

After a very depressing breeding season I only ended up with another 2 chicks from the plucker and yes she did it again so I will not be breeding with her again!

And for some good news I finally bred my first pied!!! YAY!!!

Chick 1 (plucked)

Chick 2 my pied :D

003640x441_zps04924dd8.jpg

I am going to be happy when I see a pied in the nestbox.

so far I haven't come across one lol

I wonder if Tilly's will be a pied.

Cause one of the eggs she is sitting on come from a normal that was split pied.
