New Breeding Season In Canberra

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I live in Canberra, Australia and am wondering when the new breeding season starts.

I have seen my budgies mating but don't want to put them in with breeding boxes if it is too cold for the babies to survive.

When do others start again?

thanks,

Hi babychat,

I am assuming your budgies are outside in an aviary! I live in Goulburn outside of Canberra and lived in Canberra beforehand for a number of years.

I believe that it is best to wait till at least October. But after saying that, I know some breeders who have bought covers for their aviaries and are still successfully breeding. It must still take a lot of strength from mum budgie though to breed throughout the year! Winter is a good time to help mum budgie relax a little and put her feet up. Actually, come to think about it, 'feet up' is not a good look. Scary actually! No buy buy budgie noooo..... :laughter:

As amum4children says it depends on where you are breeding them. I have a couple of Canberra people in my club and they have just paired their birds to breed but they are indoors in their bird rooms. If yours are outside I would wait until spring :)

Hi, It really depends on your set up, also your Mum's. At the moment I have chicks hatching, my breeding cages are set up within the aviary (separated from birds) I have a patio blind I put down every night . We have not been having the cold temps Canberra gets but it's been down to 7 o.night. I have not had a problem SO FAR, I bred this time last year as well. I think if the birds decide "the time is right" then go for it. I only breed pet types, not show by the way. If you have tried and tested parents you could do o.k.

Hi babychat! I'm in Canberra too....my partner is building my aviary soon and I'm hoping for breeding next month, babies by spring. Though I too worry about the cold

Hi Im in wodonga and have eggs in breeding boxes. It does get pretty cold here over night 0-2-3C. Cages are in outdoor aviary separated from other birds. I do pull blinds down to help insulate from the cold. Am yet to find out if chicks will hatch and survive.
