Posted June 20, 201312 yr Was given a male budgie and small cage about 2 years back. Purchased him a medium sized cage and a girlfriend who not long after, laid some eggs. resulting in 2 offspring. (there were 3 but one houdini'd out of the cage somewhere and somehow and has never been seen since). Well i got a good deal on an aviary so i gave it a few furnishings and moved them in on the weekend. Im not an avid bird person myself, but there is something so peaceful about watching birds just being birds. If Im missing anything or got something wrong, Please let me know.
June 20, 201312 yr Great set-up and pretty looking birds. I like the gumtree branches, I find they are a great way to keep budgerigars entertained.
June 20, 201312 yr Looks great, are you planning to breed them or just leave it as is? If you ARE NOT planning on breeding, I would take the log out as they will use it for a nest or fight over it to nest in, if no other nest box's are provided.
June 21, 201312 yr Author I hadnt put any nest box's in there as I didn't want to 'force' them to breed as such. If they happen to use the log to nest in, I will take it out after the first lot have hatched. I should also probably mention that the only couple to have paired up are my original 2 birds, so hopefully she will be the only one to become pregnant. The only thing I was worried about was having gravel in the bottom like I have, but it seems like the easiest substrate to clean so unless gravel is a no-no im going to leave as-is. Another thing I have in the makings is a solar powered computer fan to keep them getting too hot during Adelaide's summer (when it comes back around). 120mm fan will be powered by a 12w 4.5v solar panel producing a slight breeze for the birds to cool themselves. Ill post a DIY thread when I make it if anyone else is interested in doing something similar. (if i get good enough results, im going to look into making a solar powered water pump to keep their water bowl from going stagnant too) Edited June 21, 201312 yr by bfg23
June 21, 201312 yr looks good, the only thing is in time, those pebbles will just be covered in droppings, unless they are washed very well. I personally prefer pavers / concrete, as they wash really easy, don't go for sand at all it is a pain, and it can carry disease, mites etc. better than pavers. Other than that it looks really good. The last thing is that if they do happen to mate and produce offspring it is likely that another bird, could attack those young chicks and parents of. Which could result in loss of limbs or even death. So if you are going to let them breed even once I would be very careful. **KAZ** the Administrator has posted a topic about colony breeding and people always say that they will be fine and a few weeks later they comeback asking why there were dead birds. So just be very cautious on how you approach this. Great work, and really nice size cage, they will be able to spread there wings I think. And welcome to the Forum. June 22, 201312 yr you have a water dish directly under a perch ........ = poopy contaminated water Re the log.....it isnt the best of budgie breeding homes and babies will end up falling out of it if there are any and you do need to be able to check and clean nests .......... so I wouldnt have the log in there but thats just me any kind of nesting place force breeds budgie whether old enough or not and creates fights over possessions of it. If you have any budgies in there under 12 months they shouldnt have access to anywhere they can get the idea about laying eggs and raising a family ....... Nice aviary Edited June 22, 201312 yr by **KAZ**
June 23, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the replies everyone. One question before I take the log out completely. Will the birds still exhibit breeding behaviour if I turn the log vertically so they cant actually land in there? (the log is hollow both ends) Reason I ask is that most of the birds seem to love chewing on it more than everything else in the cage.
June 23, 201312 yr Hi, maybe if it's left hanging in upright position, so it has no bottom, it would be okay. They may still be able to climb through it but not be able to nest in it.
June 24, 201312 yr Author Well putting it vertically made the alpha female 'take ownership' of it and she became very very aggresive towards the other females, so I have taken it out all together. Thanks for the advice everyone.
June 25, 201312 yr good to see you found a solution. If you do decide on breeding select pairs who didn't come from the same place and breed in cabinets or cage.
June 26, 201312 yr Such a lovely set up. Where I live this would only be possible a couple months a year. Great job, looks like a nice place for budgies to live.
