August 25, 201311 yr I use rolled oats when the chicks are there, I think they are softer and non toxic so they can all have a nibble
August 25, 201311 yr They look great Paulie, now the best bit, waiting to see what colour, mutations, etc you have. The rolled oats would add some insulation for them as well.
August 26, 201311 yr Author Glad you found your little chick Paulie. Should be no problem if Mum has chicks of her own same age, except when you want to know which chick belongs to whom. l.o.l. Will you be able to tell as they feather up? Sorry robyn missed this one. im assuming Blues, greens and opaline will come from box three sky hen Normal X olive opaline/blue cock. box 2 is df splangle yellow hen X Olive sf spangle/blue cock So hope to get some df & sf splangles hopefully some olive mabe blue of some description. Either way I'm keen to see the results.
September 4, 201311 yr They are lovely chicks Paulie, doing well for your first attempt. Does no 2 chick have a violet tinge in feathers around legs?
September 5, 201311 yr Author Nadene thanks robyn chick 2 does have a blue violet tinge to the body just starting to show
September 9, 201311 yr Author Woo Hoo first baby fledged today went strait to the seed bowl and started cracking seed. yellow faced blue-violet. very happy happy
September 11, 201311 yr Author no 2 from box 3 Fledged today Looks Olive body and has pronounced violet around rump.
September 12, 201311 yr Author Robyn, am a bit surprised that am seeing this level of violet. Quite pleased though. today box 2 has had 1st chick fledged. is white DF spangle
September 12, 201311 yr Nice work Paulie. I have a d/f spangle that was pure white, he now has "suffusion" of pale violet down his chest really pretty.
September 13, 201311 yr Author Df spangle white. There is a smattering of yellow on feather ends. Mother is Df spangle yellow and father is Olive body with yellow Sf spangle/Blue,opaline. No idea yet what her colour is split to This chick has managed to get back into the nest box and hasn't re emerged as yet. Hens in both box 2 and 3 are busily removing the seed from nest boxes. I guess they want the clutch out of nest boxes so they can get down to round 2. box 1 has 4 chicks 2 will be pied and 2 will be grey normal
September 14, 201311 yr Nice chick, maybe a bit of staining from nest box also. Mine pop in and out of nest box for a few days but generally I gauge them as fully fledged once they can perch instead of hiding in the corners of cage. l.o.l.
September 16, 201311 yr Author From this To This Box 3 first clutch completed. had to remove last 2 from nest box as mum has laid again and was giving the quite a pecking. Weather here has turned cold again so bubs are inside with an incubator for a little extra warmth and they seem to all be doing quite well
September 17, 201311 yr They are lovely Paulie. Wish I could get a yellow faced violet so strong in colour : )
September 19, 201311 yr Author All of the bchicks from nest box 2 & 3 Both sets of parents are now laying round 2
