Posted May 3, 201312 yr Its like a eye infection or someone has been picking at it. the eye lid is bloody. I am worried he is blind in that eye.
May 3, 201312 yr Yeah, we can't really see what's wrong in that photo. Sometimes when they molt, the skin around the eye gets swollen from the new pin feathers. But it wouldn't be bloody, unless he was overly scratching it against things, due to it being itchy. A good thing to try is to get a wet tea bag and use it as a compress over his eye, for a few seconds. That may not cure it, but could offer some relief. Then you can continue to evaluate over the next few days. Good luck.
May 4, 201312 yr Hi, can't tell from picture, it's a bit blurry but it looks like feathers covering ear could be involved as well? I had a tube of human eye ointment that I used on my bird that had a seed husk in the eyelid and it helped a lot. If ear is affected as well it could be an infection of some sort, is there any discharge from it or just the redness?
May 4, 201312 yr Author its both eyes now. Have done the teabag thing to him. Hope his not blind in both eyes. there is redness on a eyelid photos are hard to get.
May 5, 201312 yr Author I think I have it worked out. The others were picking on him. I asked a lady who owns lots of budgies and she said he looks like his had a fight. So I have removed him and his inside, glad he can eat seed himself.
May 5, 201312 yr Keep a good eye on him and see if his feathers start to re-grow, just in case it's still and infection of some sort. Hope it's just he was bullied that way you know it's not something you have to worry about in your other birds.
May 6, 201312 yr Author other birds seem well. they have started sleeping outside the nestbox. Shall I take the nestbox away.
May 6, 201312 yr Hi, so the bird is just fledging? If so and they were in nest box, Mum may have decided to peck him because she wanted to lay again. If you have other chicks from same box, have they fledged as well? If you don't want a 2nd round take out the box. Are you colony breeding or cage?
