Posted April 29, 201312 yr My momma budgie laid her first egg on Saturday April 20th, the next on Monday , Wednesday, and another on Friday putting her at four eggs. She was due to lay her next egg yesterday (Sunday) but still hasn't laid it. Her vent is swollen just as it was right before the other eggs. She has plenty of calcium, and gets vegetables every day and hard boiled egg. Is this something that should be cause for concern, I'm becoming very worried about her Oh yeah, and she started setting on Thursday before the fourth egg.
April 30, 201312 yr She may have finished her round of eggs. If she is incubating eggs and carrying on as usual, leaving nest for a few minutes etc then returning to eggs she should be okay. there is no set number of eggs per round, she may still lay, it's not always 2 days apart, it depends on the hen.She would still be swollen around vent as a result of laying. Keep an eye on her for any signs of stress or straining to lay another but It sounds pretty normal at this stage.
May 2, 201312 yr A good practice in my opinion while you are waiting for your birds to start laying is to leave them alone as much as you can, and let them get on with it.

While I think it's good to not hover and stress out your hen, I like to do twice daily checks, morning and night, from the day I attach the nest box, whether or not there are any eggs. I feel this gets the hen accustomed to a routine, so that you don't upset her later, when you check the chicks. One thing I look for on these checks, is to make sure the hen can move and fly like normal, and isn't egg bound. If she looks fine, then I wouldn't worry about a swollen vent. And I agree, don't constantly check on her. You don't want her to think that every time you enter the room you are going to harass her.
