Posted April 28, 201312 yr Well, today I got to bring home my new little baby! He is very cute! My boyfriend had tried to talk me out of getting him, he's not as much of an animal person as I am. When we got home I took him out for a little hold to see how he'd go. Straight away my boyfriend said to put the baby on him. So much for not liking him! Haha! My boyfriend had the budgie on his knee but then straightened his legs out on the bed, the budgie then decided to climb his foot and stand on top of his big toe! The whole time my boyfriend is squirming and laughing from all the tickling! It was pretty funny. And after that he decided to sit on his head... Lol Well the little guy seems very happy and relaxed now. I'm just not very happy that the lady clipped his wing and didn't me toon it to me.. Well I suppose it just means we can get him used to us etc and then he will have his moult and we will leave him with his wings Well, here come all the pictures!! Well, there he is! Currently no name. I'm really pretty certain he's a boy. He has quite the little personality!
April 28, 201312 yr Oh my goodness, he's so sweet! I beleive you're right, he's male. And about the clipped wings: 1) I think it's a good idea to have the wings clipped when you first get a little budgie, and then let the feathers grow out with the next molt. That way, it's easier to get the little guy tame and used to you without him flying away, and then when he molts he'll already be tame and he'll be able to fly. That's what I did with my budgie boy, and if/when I get another budgie, I'd do the same thing. 2) I see that only one wing is clipped. This isn't a good idea because it makes the budgie unbalanced if it tries to glide/flutter from perch to perch, and it could hurt itself. It is much better to have both wings clipped evenly so the budgie has an even amount of feather on either side. This is much safer. Please clip the other wing or have an avian vet do it. Thank you
April 28, 201312 yr yes, clip his other wing also, its not good to have only one wing cut. And you should tell that to the breeder! When my baby budgies left to their new homes, I always clipped their wings, not that I wanted to, but for their safety. They can crash into things, the walls, windows, fall between things and get stuck etc, and in worst case, even die. so Its better for them to do this, and the wings grow back pretty quick. and congrats on your new bird! he is gorgeous!
April 28, 201312 yr It is fine to have one wing clipped, it is better because they can slow themselves down if they fall. Being hand raised he will be tame anyway he just has to get used to you. He is beautiful
April 29, 201312 yr Author I was always told that you shouldn't clip both wings.... :/ He likes to perch on my finger, but if I sit him down or sit him on my shoulder he tries to fly away. But it's more a long jump then flying or anything. Just to roam around the house. Tonight I will let him go for a little walk like he wanted to last night. Hopefully he will warm up some more tonight. He bites a fair bit! Trouble is my boyfriend can be a big baby! So if he bites my boyfriend pulls away quickly, so our little guy will continue biting if my man keeps that up. I tried telling him but then he's like "we'll he's biting me! Of course I'm going to do that!!" Then I explained it to him and he was like hmmmmm. Time to man up, I think. Hahaha!! Oh! And thanks guys! I think he's a good looking little guy too! It's a shame you can't see his colours well! We have awful lighting in the bed room and the blue is hard to see. He has blue around his bum and legs.
April 29, 201312 yr Author I know right!!! He pretends to be this big tough guy, then whimps out when a tiny baby budgie gives him a tiny little pinch! Doesn't even hurt when he bites! It's funny because he was biting me and I didn't flinch or anything then he gave David the tiniest bite and he just about hit the roof! It's very sweet seeing the together though. My boyfriend tries to say he doesn't like babies or animals. But he always caves in to them. Lol The baby was falling asleep on his perch and he was like "look. He's sleeping. " Haha and thing he did my boyfriend had to let me know. Lol So cute.

He is beautiful :/ huh. I always thought they could hurt themselves with just one wing clipped? Because they're unbalanced in flight?
April 29, 201312 yr Hi cutting one wing is old practice and vets these days recommend to cut both sides. Generally you take enough off them to limit their flight but not disable it, so the bird can fly straight and land softly. I used to only cut one side myself but changed when my vet changed and I do feel that it is more practical. Cheers Jenny

April 30, 201312 yr Author It makes sense. I will try to cut his other wing tonight. He keeps on trying to fly away from us. Is this normal when they are in a new home, because he doesn't know me? It really does scare me that he will hurt himself.. He also keep hidining under the little papertowel that I put on the bottom.... I don't know why he does this.. I walked in and thought he had found a way out some how or my boyfriend had lost him or something!! Then I noticed the towel was moving! Lol
April 30, 201312 yr It all sounds pretty normal he is still seeing you as a preditor at the moment so he is just trying to protect himself. Once he learns to trust you and that you won't hurt him things will improve. When you cut his other wing just cut the first five flight feathers that should even them up enough I think. Cheers Jenny
May 1, 201312 yr BOTH wings should be clipped. clipping just one wing is an old fashioned school of thought that has now been superceded by better knowledge and budgie observations PS cute spangle
May 1, 201312 yr Author sorry i have been neglecting this thread guys, i have had some problems with my budgie pair with chicks, i am now hand rearing them. yeah i just wish he didnt see me as a predator! i didnt see your thread before i clipped him. i just clipped it the same as his other wing. so much better! can definitely see the difference. glad i know better now. thanks Kaz, i might be a little bias, but i totally agree!
