Posted April 24, 201312 yr Hi. I have only joined today and also today is the day I,m starting our new (first) aviary. I am turning my kids cubby into an Aviary. I had budgies when I was a kid and had always had in the back of my mind it would be something I wanted to do with my kids. We are an animal loving family with Bunnies, Cockatiel, 2 Dogs, fish and Guinea Pigs. So our house id like a Zoo a bit. I also think that a nice Aviary can really make a garden. I joined because the site looks like it has some great info and I find Forums the best way to learn about the things I'm interested in. We want to breed some budgies and all have our favourite colours, so we will start with 6 (3pairs) when the Aviary is completed. I will try to post some shots of the project as it happens and I am sure the kids and I will have some questions soon. Especially about breeding the colour and variety we like. Regards Bretto

April 25, 201312 yr sweet sounds like its a good idea if the kids have out grown playing in their cubby. Welcome to the forum.. Look forward to seeing picture of the birds and aviary.
April 25, 201312 yr That's great, I love it That was one cool cubby house, the kids must have loved it. Can't wait to see the progress
April 25, 201312 yr Author Thanks Nadene. They had a lot of fun in it and still do, so it was. Bit of a hard delicious to change it. But they both agreed. You are not far from us down here at Thirlmere maybe you can help when it comes time for us to get some pairs. I love the bird you have as your avitar; what colour mutation is that. Brett
April 25, 201312 yr You are too There is a member of my budgie club that lives in Thirlmere. If you're interested in seeing some nice birds the club is having its annual budgie show on Sunday 5th of May at Picton. I've only been at the club for 6 months but apparently there were over 200 birds last year from all different clubs. My bird is a opaline, grey spangle.
April 25, 201312 yr Hi and welcome. Looks as if it will make a great aviary and the kids will get just as much fun out of it. Cheers Jenny
April 25, 201312 yr Looks great Before you begin please read this topic on colony breeding as you may want to use the aviary space for a fun place to be ( no nestboxes ) and just remove some to breeding cages at an appropriate time for safer more trouble free breeding Topic ..... http://forums.budgie...showtopic=28294 cheers kaz I LOVE your aviary Edited April 25, 201312 yr by **KAZ**

April 28, 201312 yr Looks like a lovely family project, great to see everyone involved. Good luck with it and welcome to b.b.c.
April 28, 201312 yr Author Here are a few of day two. I have a few days annual leave so I hope to get a bit more done over the next few days. Hope you like the window. It took longer than I thought. Working with timber that is not square can be frustrating but gives a nice rustic look my wife thinks. Bretto
April 29, 201312 yr You have a beautiful little helper there. When i did the extension on my aviary all my kids did was complain about the noise. The judging at the bird show starts at 9am but it takes a while to do it and there will be a bbq lunch. It's at at Picton A H & I Hall, Manangle St, Picton.

Bretto Looks good. so next stage is wire mesh? Sounds like you need to buy a square to mark off your timber, I had that problem until I borrowed my dads. can't wait to see finished product.
April 29, 201312 yr Author Hi. Today I finished the inside with the trimming and the roof for the flight. Next is level the area ready to pave. Then I have to knock up some doors for the aviary and the safety entrance. L_J it was more to do with the timber I had it was bowed cross ways so threw my measurements a bit, but it all worked out well enough. Here's a couple more shots.
April 29, 201312 yr Hey so are you using the room bit as a bird room or as a hole aviary? if as a hole aviary. Make the perches inside room higher than the ones out side. Apparently birds will sleep on higher perches. so if the weather is bad they will sleep in the room.
April 29, 201312 yr Author The whole thing will be an aviary. The room will have some breeding boxes/cages and perches and the outside area will be a flight area. I am going to pave the flight area to mae it easier for me to clean. Brett
April 30, 201312 yr Thats a good idea. So when you say breeding boxes you mean breeding box or breeding cabinet/cage (not sure whos cabinets these are but they are nice.) Edited April 30, 201312 yr by L__J
April 30, 201312 yr Author I was going to just have the breeding boxes in the room but I have changed my mind to having the breeding cages instead after I read an article that Kaz linked to this thread. Edited April 30, 201312 yr by Bretto
