Supermarket Seed Is Killing Our Budgies

Featured Replies

Posted

A few days ago one of my two budgies dropped dead. The other one was very sick ,so I went to the vet. To my amazement he said that the bird was starving .

I always have more than enough food for them. The vet told me this is a very common problem, supermarket seed like "Trill" is just not nutritionally good enough ,More than half of the birds he sees are undernourished ,and a lot of them die.

Trill advertises this as complete food for Budgies.

People buy these Seeds in best intention and starve their beloved pets to death.

I have to force feed the remaining bird with special nutrients and hope he survives.

Regards....Hanna

I know how you feel, I was using a supermarket brand too, and my little Charlie died because of the seed I was feeding him. So I looked at every seed I cold get and I saw trill and it looked good I thought but since reading this I changed to a seed diet with plenty of variety and adding extra fruit and vegies, I thought that everyone fed a bird fruit and vegies but I am surprised that there is a lot of people that just feed their budgies black and gold brand and no fruit and vegies. So if you read this and don't feed your little budgie fruit and veg and a good seed diet, please do.

That's a shocking story. I always thought Trill was a good brand because it was vitamin fortified.

I have always given my birds celery, carrots, baby spinach, grapes, bottlebrush flowers.

Welli, the surviving budgie is barely clinging to live, sitting at the bottom of the cage......I dont think he will survive.

Hi Hanna,

I think you could have some underlying issue as well 1 bird may starve but 3 at once sounds a bit much. Sometimes it looks like there is heaps of seed but it could be more husk. Depends on your set up. If you are feeding vegs as well as seed etc I think your birds could survive even if it not the best quality seed. They would also compete with each other for food, may the fittest survive type of thing but with all 3 sickly I'd check for disease or parasites/ worms before just blaming the seed.

If possible could you put last bird in cage with food water etc and keep a close eye on it. I'd give it a dose of Ivamectin first off. Warmth, check it's droppings to see if they are normal, don't just let it sit in cage and assume it's going to die, you may be able to save it if you take action now.

I recently bought a bag of avigrain seed and it was full of husks and within a week was full of weavels, hence I will never buy it again.

Thank you for all your replies. Welli is finally getting better, but he is lonely. I promised him once he is healthy again I will get him a friend, and hope that he will soon sing all day again.

Hi Hanna, glad your little one is improving. Did you give him any medication etc or what did you do for him? You'll have to post picture of him when he's better. Good luck and fingers crossed he keeps improving. :P

Unfortunatley Welli died.

So sorry Hanna it's awful that you lost all of them. Before getting any new birds, I would clean aviary/cage completly renew any branch's etc in case there was any infection there.

Don't let it put you off getting more birds we all have bad patch's of one sort or another.
