Posted March 20, 201312 yr Hi Everyone , A bit about myself and all my budgies , I have 9 in a large aviary and one of my females just laid 6 eggs how exciting , I also have 3 others in a smaller cage , all of which have special needs . One of the boys in the smaller cage whom was transferred from the Aviary , seems to be quite skinny , he is also reguritating/vomiting at times and there is green dried around his beak , in the morning he seems weak and then by the afternoon its like he's never seen food before and gains alot of energy and starts eating grass seeds and everything in his sight often eating of the floor of the cage. He is also sleeping alot during the day . Can anyone help me shed light on what this could be ? I'm a bit baffled , as sometimes I think he's really sick in the morning and then by the afternoon he seems okay. Thanks so much everyone!
March 20, 201312 yr do he have shell grit in the averiy? is he getting cuttle fish? im not too sure for i have had a similar problem but we put worming liquid in their water and gave them medicated shell grit bought from the pet store. non died after that
March 20, 201312 yr Author he's not in the aviary anymore , the aviary has concrete floors he's in a smaller cage now with shell grit on the floor , he has cuttle fish and everything available to him , should I treat him with some sulpha? it could be bacterial of some sort. I'll go and buy some worming liquid tommorow. I've never seen this before and we've had budgies for years, so I'm a bit baffled as to whats causing it .
March 20, 201312 yr i would yes because it has got a possibiliy of bacterial infection. i would also try milk thistle as well because that is really healthy for budgies and can even cure liver disease. good luck with him
March 20, 201312 yr Author Thanks and thank you for your help , i'll try anything to help him . he's eating lots of fresh grass as we speak and i've given him some milk thistle with it . I gave him 0.15 of a dose of sulpha is this the correct dose? also i'm using aristopet sulphadium, is this type good enough? I'll go and get some wormer tommorow from our avian vet and see how we go .
March 20, 201312 yr just take it coolly. if you stress too much you'll end up making a mistake so keep your head clear. keep me with the updates and its good to here too that he is getting fresh stuff too.
March 20, 201312 yr Author thanks prince_charming for your help , he was a bit wobbly on his legs tonight which he sometimes is , so ive put him in a small cage , with his seed, water and greens etc. , had some sulpha too , i'll see how he is in the morning when I last checked he was asleep on his perch. There's so many things it could be I was also wondering if he could have a crop problem , if only i could just fix him
March 20, 201312 yr If you're going to get wormer from the avian vet, then it would be a good idea to find out what his/her opinion is about the symptoms. There is a disease called Megabacteria that causes similar symptoms, in which a bird appears to be eating constantly, but is actually chewing food and spitting it back out. You may want to make sure that your bird doesn't have that, before trying all kinds of other remedies.
March 21, 201312 yr Author Hi Everyone , A sad update for you all ; unfortunatley Ronnie passed away overnight , upon inspecting his abdomen he has a large soft mass , so it possibly was a tumor . Thanks again for all your help everyone
March 21, 201312 yr Hi, sorry your Ronnie didn't make it. At least you know what the problem was. It doesn't sound like it was something that could be passed on to your other birds which is good.
March 29, 201312 yr Hello, welcome. I'm very sorry for your loss, l can see how much you loved him and i'm sure he knew that.
