Posted March 11, 201312 yr Hi when the eggs all hatch can I move the nestbox to the bottom of the cage. I haven't got decent access to my breeding boxes this time. the lid opens up ways and not side ways. So I am thinking, if I wait till they hatch would it be possible to move the nestbpox. will the hen have a problem with this?
March 12, 201312 yr Hi could you post a photo of the cage setup so we can get more of an idea of what you mean. Small adjustments are generally tolerated but you don't want to rock the boat to much at this stage if you don't have to. Cheers Jenny
March 12, 201312 yr Author i have my nestbox setup in one of them avione cages the long cages. Its got 3 self-tapping curtain hooks for hanging lace. the entrance is facing the front of the cages. so its in the far back corner. So the lid of the box can only be opened from the top. I wish I had time to make a new nestbox that was going to give me access. Seems its kinda my first second clutch of eggs I don't really wanna risk moving nestbox. I can see how many eggs she lays. but its challenging.
March 12, 201312 yr Hi, Can you lift the box down inspect the chicks. Then put it back??? That would be the best bet.. Moving the box may upset the birds so they may desert the nest....B.J. Edited March 12, 201312 yr by Bird Junky
March 14, 201312 yr Author yeah I have had to remove the hole cage from the shelf just to remove the box. I'm trying to not intervene with the eggs. mrs teddies I had no choice tonight she had moved the eggs to each corner. not sure why she left one in the concave. then she laid one about 7.22 tonight as I watched. the other birds are doing fine its just her I'm confused about
March 14, 201312 yr Have you got any nesting material in the box it can help to keep the eggs together and also gives the hens something to do. Make sure that nothing else is upsetting her like mice during the night can cause havoc. If she still decides not to sit and you want some her young you could foster some of her eggs under another laying hen. Cheers Jenny
