Just thought I would share a photo of my first double yolker. I'm not holding out hopes to get anything out of the egg but I just think it's amazing that it can happen :)

Hi Nadene, if you can see 2 yolks and it's fertile, you may get twins with a heap of luck. I think Kaz had an item on it somewhere with pics of twins. :)

I was under the impression you can't get twins out of a double Yolker?

fraternal twins meaning they shared the same egg.

thats what I was getting at.

You can get fraternal twins out of one egg but you can't get identical twins. It is very rare that they make it to hatching due to restricted space. So if this egg is fertile it is highly unlikely to hatch but it can happen :)

I had a big double yolker once and it had two embryos. Both died at different stages.

Tiny dead embryo on the left and the big one one the right.

Wow, what a shame, the older one looks like it was only a few days from hatching. Great photo :)

The egg is fertile and now I have mixed emotions knowing what is probably going to happen

Does it have the 2 yolks Nadene or is it an oversized egg? I had a really big egg last season but it was just the one chick, he's a big bird but not unusually so. Good luck if it's a double. Fingers crossed, you'll have to keep a diary on this one. :o

Well, news one of the embryos was addled but I can still see veins and movement of the other. I wonder if that is what happened to yours rachelm and that is why they died at such different stages. It will interesting to see if the one left survives to hatching.

  • 2 weeks later...

oh thats sad :(

But with these eggs they are 99% survival I guess.

Sorry Nadene, maybe first chick dying in shell set up an infection which affected 2nd chick. :(

  • 3 weeks later...

if one dies then the other does too due to contamination from the dead embryo
