Posted February 21, 201312 yr Hello, again I am nervous as I am first time breeding and I was wondering, what would happen if you touch an egg. Also how long does it take for a female to start incubating her eggs lastly the first egg she laid is small, she hasn't laid anymore yet as she laid it this arv but it is smaller to what I imagined. does this mean it is infertile?
February 21, 201312 yr You can touch the egg, it won't hurt. Don't shake it around or anything but you can touch it. When you say: "She laid it this arv.." Do you mean this afternoon? If so they lay every 2 days. Some hens don't start incubating until the 2nd or 3rd egg. Without a picture of the egg it's hard to say if it is big or small. If you wait a week or so and then shine a bright torch onto the egg it will be easier to see if the egg is fertile. Deep Breaths
February 21, 201312 yr Author thanks I have been taking breaths I will put a photo on tomorrow, and yes by arv I mean this afternoon okay got photos now, here are the links http://s1283.beta.ph...html?sort=3&o=0 http://s1283.beta.ph...html?sort=3&o=1 http://s1283.beta.ph...html?sort=3&o=2 http://s1283.beta.ph...html?sort=3&o=3
February 21, 201312 yr I'd say it looks pretty normal. Enjoy watching your budgies breed Hopefully all goes well for you. Sorry I've been away from the site for a while how many birds do you have at the moment?
February 21, 201312 yr There's no reason for me to believe it isn't. Some eggs are and some eggs aren't time will tell
February 21, 201312 yr I have 9 plus the egg, do you think it could be fertile? Lol, don't count your budgies before they hatch!

February 22, 201312 yr Author okay, well she started incubating this morning, so is it possible for only one egg or does it have to be if this ones fertile?
February 22, 201312 yr She might lay more. Each hen is different plus, unless I missed where you said you bought her recently, it's her first time so that throws another spanner into the mix. Enjoy the Stress for at least the next 18 days
February 22, 201312 yr Author well I have had her for about almost a year and yes this is her first time!
February 22, 201312 yr Budgie_Mad, budgies will start incubating any where from the 1st egg up to the 3rd egg. They will continue to lay as many eggs as they want, although I've never had any lay more eggs after the first chick hatches. There are other types of birds that lay all their eggs first, and then start to incubate, but budgies don't do that. Wait until the first egg is about a week old, and then you can candle. The best way is to leave the eggs where they are, and postion a small flashlight behind them, shining towards you. If the egg looks pink or has veins, it's fertile. If it's yellow, it's either not fertile, or else it has been layed too recently to have developed veins yet. If one is fertile, most likely they all will be, but that doesn't mean they will all hatch.
