Posted January 5, 201312 yr Hey all, I've read that Budgies 'like' boston ferns. okay so silly question (newbie here) so what does like actually mean... what do they do to/with them?? Would I hang one down from the roof of the aviary or leave them in pots on the floor?? Do they eat them or just play/forage in them??? Boston Fern http://tinypic.com/r/mwr1jn/6 Many thanks Helen xo Edited January 5, 201312 yr by Heletia
March 19, 201312 yr Be very cautious with ferns, my sister had a pair of birds and all their chicks die from eating/feeding young on bracken fern that had flicked into their aviary while they were mowing. We found out off the safe plant list that all parts off it are toxic.Even if it is a safe plant putting pots of safe plants into aviary won't last long, they will shred them to pieces in no time flat. l.o.l you can hang small branches of safe native bush's eg bottle brush, gum etc or veges like silver beet for them to eat and play on. Mine love silver beet freshly washed and water left on them to "bath" on. PLEASE CHECK the safe food list before giving them new things.
March 19, 201312 yr Hey, Prince Charming, I have deleted your post, because it is against BBC rules to advertise or link to competing budgie forums. Sorry. We have that information right here in our FAQs http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/index.php?action=artikel&cat=5&id=322&artlang=en
June 3, 201312 yr Do you have an image of Bracken fern? I had read that fern was a safe plant. My Charlie likes to nibble on it. Now I wonder if I had put him in danger. I looked up bracken fern but couldn't find a description. He seemed okay after nibbling on this.
June 6, 201312 yr Hi,Phoebes this is a picture of bracken, it's normal growing wild under trees in bushland etc. in Australia, don't know about Canada.
June 6, 201312 yr Hi,Phoebes this is a picture of bracken, it's normal growing wild under trees in bushland etc. in Australia, don't know about Canada. Thank you, it looks quite different than the fern Charlie nibbles on.
June 6, 201312 yr It is different but your fern could still be toxic. Until you can find it on a safe plant list I don't think I'd take the risk with letting him chew on it.
June 7, 201312 yr I like to bring them close to the patio door from time to time so they can see the big maple. I'll just take it down and put it in the bath when I do that. Thanks for the info.
