I have been looking everywhere for a nice normal type grey budgie for a long time to breed with and I finally found one I like, but he is handraised and I want him in an aviary. How will he go with this? Any experiences with this would be great please let me know what you've found! He is young now, and I want him to mature and grow in the aviary untill he is ready to breed.

Hi You don't have to worry. He will naturally feel strange at first, as any new bird would

introduced into a strange aviary flock. In a few days he will settle down & make a few

new friends. He's still a budgie with all the natural instincts of a flock bird.....B.J.

Rachelrose, he will be fine. My very first pet budgie was handraised by me before I moved him from the house to one of the aviary's down the back where he now makes pretty babies with his girl He was about 2 years old when I moved him into the aviary and he took to it swimmingly! He is about 7 years old now and has even stayed friendly and when I go into the aviary he lands on my head, hangs upside down off my fringe planting kisses on my cheek. I originally moved him into the aviary as my bird rescue organisation grew larger and I had all kinds of sick birds coming into the house (I didn't want my 'pet' birds to get sick too), but every now and again I have to bring my boy back into the house to feed babies or teach them to crack seed etc. As BJ said, his instincts will kick in and all will be well

Don't forget to quarantine him before you put him in your aviary.

Thanks for the advice I brought him home yesterday and now have no worries he will be fine in an aviary haha he's not as tame as the breeder led me to believe. However he and his brother who I also bought are displaying quite messy vents and sloppy droppings at the moment. Is this just from stress of moving or should I be worried? They both seem to act fine just a bit sloppy :/

It could be from the stress of moving, or it could be some other more serious issue. That's what's nice about quarantine. You can make sure it clears up without worrying that they might have already infected your other birds. And if they are stressed from moving, this gives them a chance to get over that before they meet their new flock.

 

If there are no other symptoms, I would watch and see if their poops go back to normal, once they seem settled and eating properly. Poops tend to get wet if they stop eating for a day or two. But if it continues, then you would want to look at other causes, like worms or protozoal infections.

 

Some people have a routine they go through of preventative medication during quarantine, and some just treat as needed. If you search quarantine, there will probalby be threads about it.

Also I am on tank water whereas where I get budgies from are usually on town water, would this make a difference to droppings?

I think it probably would, until they adjust to the new water. I know that traveling with my dogs, different water can affect them for a little while.

I think so too, they still look/act normal and happy. Also giving them probiotics. Will track their droppings and see what happens
