Seeding Grasses

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. I'm about to get my first budgie and want to give him the very best life possible. I've been advised that feeding him seeding grasses would be even better than sprouted seeds. What seeding grasses are good to grow in pots, and do you buy them at normal plant shops? I'd really appreciate any advice! Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum :) And good luck with your future budgie!

(sorry i don't know much about seed grasses)

Hi Go to the Forum on Diet & Nutrition. Grass Seed is for sale at any garden centre. Plant a sprinkle of seed in a pot & wait for it to grow. Or you could pull up a lump of grass that no dogs have been on, & feed them that as well as Fruit & veg....B.J.

Here is the little grass patch I'm growing on our balcony. Blessing LOVES eating the wheatgrass. I've only had him for three days and hope he may acquire a taste for these other grasses too :).

Hi there Katina,

One of the best sources of seeding grasses is literally right at your finger tips... The seed that you feed your budgie, especially the various millet seeds is the easiest and most readily available type of grass seed. If you only have a couple of birds you can easily grow it in a pot, but for some of us, or maybe just me, have a whole garden bed dedicated to growing weeds, grass seeds etc for our birds. What I often do is just empty the dishes from the cages into a pot of soil or patch of garden and let nature takes its course and it will soon grow :)

Hope that helps...

Tim

Agree with Tim, just take the seed that you already feed the birds and then grow them... You'd be surprised just how well they grow.
