hi guys

 

2 of my females budgies are nesting as its great for breeding now that its hot but they have layed to many eggs they are not sitting on them or incubating them just all 'duds'. In one box one of the female has layed 12 eggs in the other 10. i am scared of my budgies health because they never come out of the box often. i am not sure what i should do? :/

You say they never come out of box often, maybe they are incubating eggs. How do you know they are all duds? I presume they are paired with cock birds not just hens on their own. More info will help as B.J. says.

okay so i am sure the birds are around4 or 5 years old there is a large food bowl on the cage and bird bath for water the nexting boxes sit on a shelf at the back of the aviary.

(1) How many pairs in the cage.. (2) What's in the food.. (3) Drinking & bathing water should be separate. (4) What's the size of the cage.. (5) How many nest boxes..(6) How do you know the eggs are dud.. (7) Are they getting cuttle & iodine block.

Isn't "4 or 5 years" at the upper limits of breeding age?

i am not sure of the limits of breeding though i cant take the boxes out because the younger budgies stilll want to breed and BJ

 

1. there are around 3-4 breeding pairs but more males (10 budgies)

2. just wheat and basic small parrakeet seed coles or IGA bird mix no sunflowers or corn

3.i am not sur how to seperate baths and water? they dont seem to bath much i normally put my hose on a mist and spray the budgies lightly. i have never seen my budgies bath in there water.

4.the cage is around 1.3 meters wide and 2.5 meteres long

5. 1 three hole box(3 conpartments) and 1 two hole (2 compartments)

6. they have pushed them to the front and sit on nothing

7. no they dont seem to eat cuttle

8. no i will check though!

Hi There is no cut off date for a females fertility. A good hen is used as long as her fertility lasts...

Please go to forums & click on to, Diet & nutrition. Your diet not adequate..

You can buy small drinking water dispensers from any Pet shop...

You cage is just about big enough for 4 pairs. Remove all the other birds. Have you somewhere to put any babies???

Budgie nest boxes are single entry & should be placed at 35cm apart..

Cuttle is provided for its calcium content, the birds will use it when its required.....B.J.

Hi your aviary is plenty big enough for what you have, extra males is better than extra hens but they may disrupt fertility as every time a hen tries to be mated you have other males pushing each other off but that can happen in evenly paired aviaries. I find that odd males attach themselves to an existing pair by feeding the other male or they pair up with each other.

As for your hens not sitting it may be because other hens are constantly on their box I would add some extra single boxes to give them more choice.

Have your boxes got concaves in them so the hens can gather the eggs together? and have you added any nesting material.

It is good to supply as many forms of calcium as you can to your breeding birds just in case they aren't getting enough from one type.

I find supermarket brands of seed aren't that good as they use a lot of the cheaper value seeds, if you have to use one from the supermarket use one like trill or something similar. Most stock feed places supply good quality budgie mixes if you have one near you. If you could give them plenty of milk thistle and seeding grasses daily it will help improve their diet, mine also like peas and corn kernels as well.

Hi, If you are near a produce store, check out their budgie mix seed. I buy mine at $25.00 for 20 kg bag. It's very clean seed, no dust or rubbish, lots of millet, canary seed etc.you can see through clear section of bag at what seeds are in it.( plus it's listed on bag). I have not had any feeding problems and my birds are all healthy active breeding birds. It works out a lot cheaper than buying from a super market. Then add whatever vegs you can get your birds to accept. Mine get.

corn on cob,

spinach/silver beet from garden.

carrots, tops,roots, dirt and all I just pull one out of garden and add to aviary,

beetroot raw, cut in half and put in dish also leaves of beetroot.

cucumber, some like it not others.

To name a few,I also give them various small branch's of bottle brush, gum leaves (now and then), thorn less rose clippings, seeding grasses, chick weed BUT ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SAFE FOOD LIST. Before giving them new things. If it's bought vegs I wash them well, garden I don't as we don't use any chemicals etc on what I feed them. Generally try them with whatever vegs you have that are cheap and good.(not stuff going off) If you wouldn't eat it don't give it to birds. Also you have to keep trying, they won't eat new things first time you have to keep adding little bits until 1 starts to eat it, then, usually, others will try it

Then you need your cuttle bone, shell grit Iodine/calcium blocks etc.

All my water bottles are sipper type bottles (similar to guinea pig) this keeps water clean, no droppings etc can contaminate water. My birds all learnt to drink from them from breeding cage age, even older birds soon learnt to use them very quickly. I add soluble Iodine to my water bottles every other week also.

 

I have "gone on" a bit but hope this helps you a bit.

thnaks i wil defintley get more boxes and more nesting materials i will try to give them a water despencer and some fruit and veg. though its hard to get diffrent budgie seed beacuse i only have 1 supermarket that sells bird products and thats it but fruit and vege will halp and my babies all go to homes of my friends and family. i think im doing okay. thanks
