bought two budgies from PetSmart end of Sept 2012.

they have been doing well but then we got a dog.

to protect them from the dog, the birds were living in my office.

last week I have been leaving the office doors open to see if the dog was okay with them and everything was fine but when I went on the phone, or tried to dictate a letter, their squacking would interfeare.

so I moved them back out of the office.

by this afternoon, one was flailing around on the cage floor. they both appeared to be sick.

there were some bites from a nearby plant I think my wife called it Chinese something vine

anyway I took one to the vet. the vet said she was guessing, could be virus, could be bacterial, could be something they ate

but she looked up the type of plant and at worst, said it would make them sick, throw up, diarrhea etc but not flail around like this.

guessing, she prescribed antibiotics, formula for food and water. Ive given them both a bit of each. they are still alive but not looking well.

any ideas would be great thanks for your help.

ps Ive since moved them back where they were in the office but it might be too late now.

well its 1040est. I think one just died - the kids named him or her Merlin. the other one, "Excalibur" is hanging on for the moment.

Is your vet an avian vet?

Hi There ain't no Avian vets.. Just vets that know a bit about birds....B.J.

If everything was fine until they had access to the plants, I'd still be looking at that as the cause. If both got sick at once it's not like a virus passing from one to the other. See if you can find out the correct name of plants and check on f.a.q. toxic and non toxic plants for a clue.

if they are not getting better they might not be eating or drinking try putting a hot water bottle at the bottom of a small cage and put the antibiotics in the water, after a while they will have to drink the water, try it and good luck with it all hope they get well soon.
