Posted October 13, 201212 yr I know that this question may be totally ridiculous. But I have 4 budgies in one aviary. Two male and two female, there are two nesting boxes and it seems the two females are checking out (going in and out together) the same nesting box. While the two males are just minding their own business not paying any attention to the females. Is it possible that the females have paired together and think that they can breed? Thank you everyone!
October 13, 201212 yr It's more likely they are just checking out nest box's, I have heard of 2 hens using same nest box & rearing young but usually they will fight hammer and tongs over a specific nest. They will toss out eggs or young (or worse kill them, or mum) if they decide they want nest box, if you colony breed. Watch and see if either have bonded with a male and see the result then if they decide to breed. You may then have to separate the pairs if they cause trouble.
October 13, 201212 yr Author Thank you Robyn, The two Hen's came from the same breeder and all four birds have only been in the same aviary together for about a month. This is the first time I have seen any kind of bonding between any of them, so I guess we can just hope for the best and pray that there will be minimal fighting and end up with all four pairing up (to the right sex) and rearing some beautiful young!
October 13, 201212 yr As you have breeding box's in aviary and if they are in breeding condition, could you some how divide aviary in half with a pair and 1 nest box in each side? If your prepared for the to breed that is, just a thought.
October 13, 201212 yr Hi Breeding birds in a flock requires the number of boxes should be enough to give each hen a choice of at least of two.. Trouble will be the only out come when two hens like the same box... The sexuality of all creatures is subject to the same vagaries as us humans....B.J.
October 14, 201212 yr Hi I had exactly the same thing happen with some I bought from the same breeder. These 2 looked identical except for minor differences. They were I'm guessing nestmates originally and the bond was still there when I got them even though they were older. They both were going in the same nestbox constantly. Not taking any notice of the cock birds. I took one hen out and put it with a cock I had and I reckon maybe 2 weeks they were in love lol. I had to seperate the 2 hens or they just would'nt pair up and as soon as I did worked a treat and now have 4 beautiful babies to them. A work collegue's little boy lost his budgie (died) so I gave him the other one. So my advice would be the same as others, "seperate them from each other" regards Steve
October 14, 201212 yr try seperating them with a BOY for a while so the pair, because there are 2 boys doing the same thing in my avairy because theres not enough hens goodluck!
October 17, 201212 yr Author Thank you everybody for the advice! I haven't done anything yet, however the two hens have definitely realized their are also two 'boys' in the aviary! One Hen and one Cock have been feeding and grooming each other non stop this week, and I noticed today that the other two have decided to follow in their foot steps! Depending on whether they end up fighting over a next box will determine whether or not I separate them. But fingers crossed and I won't have too! I'm starting to get excited of the possibilities now, stay tuned to see how they progress
December 23, 201212 yr Hi Sounds like, not all your birds are in breeding condition. How old are they.. Give details of diet.....B.J..
December 25, 201212 yr Sounds like your birds have finally heard about the birds and bees, now it's a waiting game to see the results. Since Oct you could have chicks by now, any updates?
