October 8, 201212 yr Hi guys, I have a problem with my nexting boxes mice keep invading my nesting boxes. This is interupting breeding and the bufgies and were they sleep the mice keep eating the eggs and hurting the mothers. I have washed the boxes 3 times in the past month please help! P.S: please send me a personal message or on this forum Rosy this is posted on the wrong forum, but to answer your post. The problem is not washing out your box's but GETTING RID OF THE MICE. Your problem won't go away until you have mouse proofed your aviary/cage whatever. I'd take out your nest box's until you have no more mouse activity around your birds. It's heartbreaking to see your eggs chicks etc. eaten or injured when it can be avoided. FIRST STEPS- FIRST GET RID OF THE MICE. IN DOING SO MAKE SURE YOU USE BIRD SAFE TRAPS OR BAITS WHERE YOUR BIRDS CAN'T ACCESS THEM. After you do this re post on say health tips etc or breeding tips to say how you went. Good luck with it.
October 8, 201212 yr Place poison around your aviary ( not inside ) and try to kill them. Put in a concrete floor to your aviary. The other members may have some other tips. Thanks
October 8, 201212 yr What is your aviary set up like? Post some pics so we can see. That will help us offer advice. Some general questions: - what is the floor like? - have you worked out how they are getting in? - what size wire is on the aviary? - what have you attempted to stop them?
October 8, 201212 yr Author hi dave i have got A part concrete/dirt floor (planning to put concrete) The mice dig holes into avairy The wire 1.5 cm wide(very small) I have tried to clean out the boxes, covering holes with dirt, sticking rocks into the holes and putting budgie feathers in the boxes( to get scent) hi budgie lover thankyou for your help although i have dogs and chickens staying in the yard as they will eat it but thanks for the good idea
October 9, 201212 yr Hi roseydoo sometimes it is almost impossible to keep mice out of your aviary but what you must do is make sure they cannot get into their feed and try hanging your boxes directly to the wall, I use small pieces of metal strapping one screwed to the box and the other rivited on the wall of the aviary, the one on the wall needs to be bent a little in an arc so the piece on the box can slide into the one on the wall. You can also buy similar mounting brackets on line somewhere and maybe at bird sales if there are any in you area. Look closely at your aviary and establish where they are climbing up, there is usually some brown staining along where they run from their urine which helps them get grip. Hang your boxes in the middle of the walls away from anything they can climb if possible or you will keep having problems. Hope this helps and your aviary can accommodate these sorts of changes. Cheers Jenny
October 9, 201212 yr Hi Roseydoo, You keep tacking your questions onto the ends of other people's threads, and ancient ones, at that. I have moved your question and Robyn's answer out of Daz' thread on Breeding calendars, and put it in with this one. That's why it appears twice, above. When you want to ask a question of your own, please start your own topic. If you want to add comments in other people's threads, that is fine, but try to make it pertinent to what the other person is talking about, and not hijack their topic. Thanks, Finnie P.S., I hope you are able to solve your mouse problem.
