Posted August 31, 201212 yr Hi all, I have 2 budgies and one has a blocked preen gland. A visit to the vet confirmed this and antibiotics were prescribed despite no evidence of infection (I did query this and was told that a 'side-effect' of these may be the unblocking of the gland). The vet commented that it was one of the worst cases she'd seen and the next step after the a/b's plus increased vitamin intake (started the same day) would be a trip to a specialist, a biopsy and subsequent treatment that "......will be very expensive.....". My question is: can the 'growth' be removed easily by a vet? My very ignorant understanding of the condition is an oil blockage that has solidified - am I close? If this is the case and taking into account how firm the vet handled the lump, is it not possible to simply break/twist it off? I assume by now that most of you reading this are cringing so please excuse my ignorance! Thanks in advance.....
September 2, 201212 yr Hi Now that's what I call a question..... If that's your vets diagnosis. How can we who haven't examined your bird contradict his advice. I'm sure your vets not trying to rip you off........B.J.

My, I'll bet that you're just the type of individual that people at parties queue up to talk to & have fun with!! Maybe next time you'll read a post properly before attempting to answer an enquiry. September 3, 201212 yr Hi js474, do you have a photo of the problem area? If it's a blocked gland, I shouldn't think it would need that extreme level of treatment (specialist etc). A feather cyst maybe, can you supply picture's so more knowledgeable breeders may comment?
