Posted August 8, 201212 yr Hi there, Im just hoping someone can really help me figure out this growth on my budgies back. He is a about 7 years old and seems to be normal healthy, I hav ent noticed any changes in his day to day activities or his poop. He was preening one day when i noticed a black growth on his back above his tail feathers ( near the oil gland perhaps? ) The growth has taken a claw like shape and pretty much looks like a gross overgrown claw. The part where the growth is attached to his back seems like it could be filled with pus. The growth is very hard and did soak it in some warm water, but it didnt get any softer. Does anyoneknow what it could possibly be and if it can be removed at home? Or anything that i can do to help it? anyone know how i can put up pics also? i ahve pics of his growth Thanks so much im really worried
August 9, 201212 yr Sounds like a french moult feather that has not grown properly. If you are not confident about pulling the feather out and gently squeezing the puss out I would advise you take your bird to the vet for treatment. If it is a french moult feather it will more than likely return. (when removed french moult feathers have a rounded soft open end rather than a pointed hard closed end)
August 9, 201212 yr I would take him to the vet as I had the same with one of my young birds on his first moult. He had french moult for sure as he was missing his flight feathers and had a large cyst under his wing. He also had the horn like black feathers growing above the base of his tail. At the end of the day I took him to the vet and had to put him to sleep.
