Don't blame yourself for the egg loss. A hen in breeding condition has more than enough calcium in her body She doesn't need a daily top up. Hens don't come with a guarantee to lay perfect eggs every time. Any damaged eggs are normally eaten. Nothing goes to waste in nature, if the birds don't eat it it would attract. insects etc. Unless your birds a very tame, restrict your looking in the nest box to one a day as this can cause damage to eggs by hen scrambling from the box in panic.....B.J.
August 4, 201212 yr Hello The number of times a nest box is opened. Should not be governed by human curiosity... but rather by the tolerance of the hen to the intrusion. Breeders, pairing birds who know & are familiar with them Can inspect boxes more often than say a relative newbie, using bought in unfamiliar birds. A hen leaving her box in a panic can accidentally break eggs....B.J.
August 4, 201212 yr Hi F.Panda, just make a note of date of first egg, expect next egg in 2 days. Leave nest box in position and only check every couple of days until she has settled in to incubating eggs or you may end up with no eggs/chicks by being overly eager. My thoughts only.
August 4, 201212 yr My take on checking nest boxes is that I check them at 8:30am and 8:30pm, from the day I give them the box. Then they get used to the fact that I will be doing it, even before they go in to lay eggs. This gives them a week or two, depending on how fast they get down to business, of learning to tolerate the routine. I always give a few light warning taps to the side of the box before opening the lid. Funky, you can get them used to a routine, but now you no longer have the pre-egg time period to do it. So you will have to judge for yourself how flighty and upset your hen gets. But definitely, don't take the box down or move it anymore!
