Posted July 28, 201212 yr out of the 8 fertile eggs that my budgies had they were all DIS, i was looking at eggs closely and they all has cracks , i belive this was due to the nextbox not having a concave, i provided shavings in the nest thou, the hen has laid a new egg, should i leave the nestbox? or should i remove it and let her have a rest?, i know its a new egg because i discarded all the eggs from the nest because they were broken, it had been 4 1/2 weeks since she had laid em, and now yesterday she laid a new egg, thanks
July 28, 201212 yr Author Try making a concave in the shavings and let her lay again are you sure its safe for her to give it another go? Edited July 29, 201212 yr by Finnie
July 29, 201212 yr If its her second clutch then it should be fine just make sure you provide enough calcium for the eggs. After that you should give her a rest. Sorry if im wrong, please correct me if i am.
July 29, 201212 yr That sound right provide a cuttlefish bone and mIneral block and after she has finished give her a rest
July 29, 201212 yr Are you sure the other 8 were DIS, and not just infertile? Since they were all cracked, can you remember any event happening during the time period that could have upset the hen and caused her to knock them all around? The lack of a concave is not necessarily the reason. I have one nest with no concave, and various hens have used it successfully. And if you have provided nesting material, that can help the hen keep the eggs where she wants them. I have had fertile clutches fail to hatch though, after a storm caused night frights in my birdroom. It's fine for her to have a second round. Sure, she had to produce a lot of eggs and sit on them for a long time, but she didn't have to also feed and raise chicks for the four weeks that usually takes. She should be fine, as long as you can tell she is still in good condition. Maybe this next clutch will turn out better.

August 2, 201212 yr That sounds like a good plan, since this would be her third round. I assume the foster hen's lone fertile egg will hatch around the same time as the foster eggs?

Yes that is correct , sadly 1 of the 3 foster eggs ive put was eaten i dont know why thou... Hmm, sounds like the foster parents may have problems. Do you have any other pairs you could foster to? Do you have any fake eggs or marlbes you can put in amongst the good eggs, in the faint hope that the egg eater will by chance try to eat the fake one, and then learn that eating eggs is a bad idea? I don't hold out a lot of hope for that plan, but I feel like when I've had a pair eat their first egg, and I put a fake one into the nest, it somehow must have worked. Because when they laid their second egg, they didn't eat it. Or any of the rest. But I really couldn't say for sure that the fake egg taught them. They might have just got with the program on their own.

If your eggs were dried etc they probably would not be fertile so not dead in shell. If you had all eggs with semi grown chicks in them yes d.i.s. The dead chick would be smelly etc but maybe the other eggs were not really d.i.s.

The eggs were fertile because i always candle them a week after they are laid and write down the date they were laid, and incubation period, and saw that they where fertile and growing saw a bunch of veins on them Edited August 31, 201212 yr by Finnie
