Odd Feathers Around The Eye

Featured Replies

Hello

So one of my budgies has odd feather around one eye. I don't think they are falling out but they really don't look normal like his other eye (Pictures below).

Ive checked his beak and feat and they seem to be alright (No scales or anything). So i was wondering if anyone knew what it was and should i put him in quarantine and take him to the vet?

Cheers.

(Sorry for the bad photos; he was wriggling)

Hello Vet asp. As your pics were not very clear. Even if its just a mild eye infection, visit the Vet......B.J.

I'm not going to contradict BJ's advice to take him to the vet. You will find just about everywhere that the standard answer is, if in doubt, see the vet. However, there is one thing you could consider first. Seeing as how you have checked him over thoroughly, and you had no other symptoms to report to us. Is he molting?

I have found that often when pin feathers come in around the eye, it causes a kind of bare patch, that can look pink. The first time I saw it I was quite alarmed, but then the pin feathers came in further, and I could tell what they were, and all was Okay. So IF he's just molting, you might have nothing to worry about.

By the way, what do you think of the feathers above his cere? They look a little ruffled in the photo. Are they stained? Does he have any nasal discharge?

Hey Guys, thank you BJ and Finnie.

Ive checked him again today and he seems fine both physically and behaviour wise.

@Finnie - I checked his cere and the surrounding feathers and they seem to be his normal colour (the lightning in the photo was a bit deceiving).

After looking him over today and reading your advice (and checking the other topics on moulting) it seems that he is just moulting ( I'm going to keep an eye on him for a few days anyway).

Also, the reason he looks a bit ruffled in the photo is because i had to catch him and he was panicking a bit (tried to do it as fast as possible).

Thanks both BJ and Finnie

Dont discount entirely the scaly face as the beginning signs are there bad pictures or not IMG_0003.jpg?t=1343116743

The thin line of slight crustiness at the lower edge of the cere added to the slight balding around the eye would be a sign scaly face is creeping in....so treat for it. Spot on ivermectin the treatment thats best :)
