Hi You don't have to make a candler. Just balance an egg on an upturned little torch.

The type used by CSI . on the TV shows. Switch on the torch to see little veins growing

in a fertile egg at about 7 days......B.J.

But I don't wan the torch to be too big and the light spilling out the sides

 

I just use a little keyring torch,( it takes 3 AAA batteries in a cylinder) It's small enough to use in nest box without disturbing the eggs.

If you position it right you can see if egg is fertile.

Hi. okay, buy a small torch with a lens no bigger than your thumbnail. If you feel you must

make a box candler. Cut a half inch diameter hole in any small box & put a night-light

type candle inside. Light candle. lay egg on it's side over the hole & observe.

Candle candlers can over heat eggs if care is not taken. Once your proficient at candling

you should be able to check eggs at 1 per second.....B.J.

Get a used milo tin, go the bottom and push a pen or something through, or drill a small hole, whatever. take lid off and place the tin over a torch, sit the egg in the pen hole, and voila.

Just putting in my two bobs worth. Instead of a candling box, you may wish to have a look at purchasing a "LED Lenser 360 degree Flex light" torch. I use one of these and have found them to be brilliant. Flexible head, strong single LED light, 1 x AAA battery, small enough to be able to check eggs in nests without having to touch them. Not exactly cheap, but you will never need another for checking eggs. Mine came from "Aussie Disposals" a number of years ago, have seen them on ebay and a google search should find a number of other suppliers.

Just to add Dilster, as you are new to breeding (I think) it's not a good idea to remove eggs from nest to check for fertility. When you get a bit more experience at it you could, at the moment just check any eggs IN THE NEST without risking addling or chilling the eggs. My view only.

If you make a candler you will have to remove eggs from nest to check them. That is why a small torch or similar is a good idea, you don't have to touch the eggs at all.

You will be amazed how easy it is to see the first veins of a fertile egg. I have found that most budgie eggs are quite transparent when a small amount of light is shone onto them. No need for any expensive torches. I got a small LED keychain torch from the supermarket for around $5. It is important not to touch the eggs because they can addle.

I got a small 1led torch and I candled a chicken egg last night and it worked I knOw a budgie egg is smaller and the end os he torch is about 10mm so it'll do
