Hi all, Have been given 2 birds

. One has scale on legs. I have dosed it wth Ivomectin, vasaline on legs as well in the meantime.

What I want to know is do you have to pick the crusty bits off after treatment or will they drop off etc? Also what time frame does it take to know if the mites are eradicated. Haven't had to treat for this before.

Do not pick at the "crusty bits" as skin will come off with them, causing the bird to bleed.

 

It will scab and fall off over the next two weeks or so, depending on how bad it is.

 

If there has been no improvement after two weeks, give another drop of ivermectin to the back of the head.

Thank you Dave, it's not very severe at this stage so hopefully by the time his quarantine is up he may be clear of it.

I agree with Dave. I just read recently that the Ivermectin treatment may need to be repeated after two weeks in severe cases, or ones that don't respond right away.

Have read f.a.q but can't find if you need to treat cages etc or just the bird? Do the mites only infect bird or cages as well?

 

Is the spray on mite treatment okay to use on birds not yet showing signs of scaly face etc.?

From what I understand, for scaley face mites, you just treat the bird. For other mites, you treat the cage as well, and throw away any perches or stuff that can't be properly decontaminated.

 

For birds that aren't showing any signs, you can still use ivermectin on them. It is what I prefer to use, and I don't fool around with any of the sprays. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to double up on them by using two types of insecticide.

 

If I have birds in quarantine, and one of them looks suspicious, I put a drop of ivermectin on all of them.

 

I've only ever once treated my whole flock with ivermectin, and that was because one bird was plucking, and I treated them all as a preventative, just in case the plucking was from a mite. But no one ever did develop a mite problem, so either the preventative worked, or else there were no mites to begin with.

Thanks Finnie, as a precaution I caught all my birds and dosed them all with Ivamectin. All looked o.k but better safe than sorry. I usually do mine about every 3 mths or so, to keep any worms etc at bay.
